Reservoir Dogs will be celebrating its 25th anniversary next year after the seminal Tarentino film launched all the way back in 1992. The film focused on the aftermath of a heist gone wrong, with the group of codenamed strangers all trying to figure out who threw them under the bus. The film is fantastic but omits the bloody dealings that a more successful run of heists the group might have had in an alternate timeline. Reservoir Dogs: Bloody Days is that very different universe.

In a style reminiscent of games like Hotline Miami, Bloody Days will have you taking control of Mr. Blonde, Mr. Blue, Mr. Brown, Mr. Orange, Mr. Pink, and Mr. White in a series of bloody heist jobs across 18 distinct levels. The top-down action will let you switch between team members as you gun down all those who stand between you and payday, with a slight twist. Bloody Days is as much about planning as it is about shooting, forcing you to micro-manage your group so that no one bites the bullet prematurely.

To do that, you’re given a neat little rewind feature to play around with. At any moment you can stop time and rewind a few seconds back to deal with a previously unseen threat. You might be mowing down foes as Mr. White only to have a surprise attacker jump him from behind, as an example. Rewind, get Mr. Blue in place and prevent the attack from ever happening, as you continue on through each level in a similar manner.

It’s a novel trick that might inject a little more variety into the top-down action, so long as it keeps up the momentum (unlike another recently released top-down title). Reservoir Dogs: Bloody Days might be using its name to attract attention it would otherwise lose, but I like that the game itself is what has me curious about playing. It’s out on Steam on May 18th, with an Xbox One launch later this year.
