Darkness2

The first Darkness game, based on the popular Top Cow comics from the mid to late 90’s , was great. It wasn’t revolutionary, or mind-blowing or particularly exceptional, save for the phenomenal writing. Despite its issues; middling gameplay elements, unpopulated open world areas and under utilised darkness powers, I loved the game. It had an unparalleled  level of immersion and atmosphere thanks mostly to the aforementioned penmanship.

As you can imagine, I was tickled pink to received a press release from 2K games announcing a sequel.

From the release, it’s sounds like the sequel is going to return a little more to the comic book’s roots.

The Darkness II breaks out of the sea of conventional first-person shooters with its fervid Quad-Wielding gameplay, which will allow players to slash, grab, and throw objects and enemies with their Demon Arms while simultaneously firing two weapons. The game is layered with the use of dark versus light, steeped in deep and twisted storytelling, and engulfed in stylistic violence that is visualized through a hand-painted graphic noir technique that stays true to its comic book origins.

That…sounds pretty awesome. The game is being developed by Digital Extremes, the guys behind Dark Sector – which, despite the mediocre reviews is a game I really enjoyed. I hope they can live up to the work of previous developers Starbreeze, who’re currently busy with a reboot of Bullfrog’s Syndicate. for more information, keep an eye on www.embracethedarkness.com.

The game will be available later this year on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.
