During this whole pissing competition of a next-gen console war, we’ve been saying that it will eventually come down to how people spend their money. Well, Sony is showing some of their numbers, and I’m pretty impressed.
In the company’s earnings call, CFO Masaru Kato enthused:
Compared to past platforms, the pre-orders that we have received for this new platform is much, much, much higher
Andrew House has said that over 1 million units have been pre-ordered. We’re not just talking about people putting a name down on a list – usually pre-orders require some sort of deposit. So, we can count on these being authentic pre-orders. But wait, there’s more!
Sony is expecting to sell 5 million units by 31 March 2014. That’s a lot of consoles – when the PS3 launched, Sony only managed to ship 3.5 million in the first fiscal year. If they can hit 5 million, they will boost profitability and secure themselves a sold foothold in the market.
Do you think it’s just the size of the market the PS4 has gone for at launch? Is this a breadth vs depth/market penetration thing with Microsoft? Oh no, I’m back to that pissing competition thing.

Your not missing that much, bought a “real” Twinkie at corner store near me that sell imported US and UK snack. (was almost R20 for a single one).
Our Tinkie is actually better, the outside is bit crispier but got a oily aftertaste and the “cream: inside isn’t as sweet.

There is a very good reason why BluRay and others features require a firmware update. It allows Sony to only pay for licensing when people do the firmware updates. So instead of selling 5 million consoles and paying for 5 millions licenses. Only maybe 4 million will do the firmware update and the other 1 million don’t.

Another thing that pisses me off more is having “exclusive content” for certain platforms. It feels that in the last decade they replaced game developers with politicians over promising, under delivery and preferential treatment for those who got their heads further up the anal canal.

It’s wrong to sit around and complain about something without conveying your displeasure to the company, as thousands of other people have done. Which is why Shuhei Yoshida has been discussing meetings with the PS4 dev team regarding the music and DLNA support and word has it, may be reversed shortly.
No offense oVg, but this kind of anonymous bellyaching is part of the problem. If you actually feel strongly about something, posting on a random gaming website’s forums, isn’t going to inform the object of your ire. It’s simply going to get lost in a jumble of other posts, on a site that is only connected to Sony by the mere fact that Sony makes games, and LG reports on games.
And for the record, PC doesn’t play PS3 games either. So, while I understand that wasn’t exactly what you were referring to, it doesn’t solve the problem entirely.

Hope for Sony this is true, if the PS4 has a launch failure like the PS3 and with the electronic division posting a $2bil loss this quarter alone we can probably see another 10k to 20k people loosing their jobs next year

5 million is a tall order to hit by March, but there’s a buzz around the PS4, which I haven’t seen since the PS2 days. Let’s just say… it’s going to get interesting.

I live in the UK, and the PS4 is pretty much sold out until next year – huge pent up demand for the next generation consoles.
