The 58GB Fallout 4 high resolution texture pack is available, if your PC can handle it

I didn’t quite find myself as enraptured with Fallout 4 as I’d hoped to be. It wasn’t the setting; Boston proved to be a wondrous wasteland, filled with interesting locales and diversions. It wasn’t the characters, because Nick Valentine, Piper and Curie all proved to be entertaining companions. I would not complain if Preston Garvey were to be patched out though.

I think Fallout 4’s biggest problem was the relative lack of actual roleplaying. The game relied far too much on action shooting, and far too little on conversation. Here’s what we said about that in our review:

“During exchanges, you’re now given the choice of 4 responses, but each response only has a few words or even just a single word as a description, so it becomes hard to tell what exactly your character is going to say. Conversations end up feeling somewhat inconsequential and disjointed, and it kind of hampered my immersion. It’s countered somewhat by a well-voiced player character, but there’s a lack of gravitas – and as a result, impetus to push the story forward. Overall, the story is serviceable, but the real meat of the game lies in the world, and the stories you build up for yourself.”

The best thing about Fallout 4 is its world – and if you own a suitably beefy computer, that world will now look a whole lot better. The High Resolution texture back for Fallout 4 is now available on PC, letting those of you with ubermachines run the game at its very best. The texture pack weighs in at an astronomical 58GB, but adds in super, duper high-resolutions textures.

Remember though, you’re going to need some of the best hardware available right now:

  • Windows 7/8/10 (64-bit OS required)
  • Intel Core i7-5820K or better
  • GTX 1080 8GB/AMD Radeon RX 490 8GB
  • 8GB+ Ram

Those are frightening specs. The Intel 5820K is a 6-core 3.3GHz processor, and that in itself is a ludicrous ask. It needs to be coupled with a GTX 1080 or Radeon RX 490 as well.

If you prefer to get your Fallout fun on console, there’s a PlayStation 4 Pro patch coming along soon that’ll increase performance, increase draw distances and make the game look just that little bit shinier. If you’ve got the game on Xbox One, then cue the sad trombone here. Though, at least the Xbox One version has decent mod support.

you mean INCREASE Draw distances, surely, the Pro patch won’t have worse pop in, will it?

Well, by reducing draw distance, you will increase performance

What are those specs? Why even release an update 1% of your player base can actually use?

I’d even pay for a full price PS4 Fallout game instead of those PC specs.

Indeed. AAA gaming is a joke so all that power would be wasted

Seen workstations for high end modelling and complex, extremely lengthy calculations. They could run this, minus the graphics card. Trick is, these workstations cost R20k to R30k each

Even if I had the PC to support this, doubt I’d do it. Fallout 4 was lacking that special something to keep me hooked.

Like all the Fallout games, I suffer from fatigue. BUT Fallout 3 and New Vegas I played GOTY editions, with all DLC, first time, so no need to replay.

Time will tell, but like Skyrim (also played Vanilla), the thought of starting again leaves me feeling cold and uninspired.

Make no mistake, I got waaaaay more than my money’s worth out of the money put into this game, for sure.

Fallout 3 GOTY, that was something amazing to me. I played through it 5 times. It had that special something that hooked me.

I tried playing Skyrim vanilla and I was bored after 2 hours. When I modded it I found it a far better experience and spent countless hours playing.

It is sad that game developers have the mentality ‘the modders will fix our bugs’.

Nah, I played Skyrim on Xbox 360 for a solid week, wife went away to see her Brothers new child just as it was released. I loved it, played to for months afterwards.

It seems a lot of people are playing it on PC’s much weaker than the recommended spec without issues based on some of the reviews 🙂
