720p vs 1080p is a “PR differentiation” say Witcher devs

The PlayStation 4 version of The Witcher 3 may or may not look and run better than the Xbox One version. the same could really be said of any game coming for the new consoles, so that’s not really interesting. According to the Witcher 3 developer CD Projekt RED, it doesn’t rally matter anyway.

"We are still working on squeezing the juice out of the consoles and Microsoft are supporting us in this respect," CD Projekt’s Marcus Iwinski told Eurogamer. "The final effect, whether it’s 720p, 1080p – we had the debate in the studio about it and actually asked our tech guys to explain how it works, and they sent me some complicated graphs that ‘if I have this size of the screen, and I sit one meter or two meters from it, then I might be able to see the difference’.

"It’s more of a PR differentiation," he added, "which is very important for Sony right now – and they are using it, obviously – than something that is really meaningful to gamers.

"We’re definitely working to max out each of the platforms in terms of what we can get, because that’s a crucial element of The Witcher. Will there be big differences? Really I don’t think so. It’s too early to say. If there will be, they will be tiny. It will be more like people talking ‘hey, I have this and you have that and this is better’.

As much as I actually agree, I find this very hard to believe coming from the guys whose last game, the Witcher 2, was at the time one of the benchmarks for melting PC graphic cards with its ludicrous ubersampling.

For the most part, resolution isn’t nearly as important as frame-rate, and half the time people don;t realise that they’re looking at upscaled 720p as opposed to 1080p, but you’ll sure as hell notice if your game feels like it’s a slideshow.

The Witcher 3 has been delayed to 2015 to give it extra polish, and will probably melt graphics cards anew upon its release in February next year.

This will be the game that christens my new PC. It shall not melt nor sail into an iceberg.

Also gives us time to see whether OVG commits to A: Falkenberg, or B: to buying a PC.

My guess would be B, followed soon by A.

What, when he realises you have to be online as much as with a console? 🙂

More. Two of the best things on PC, Steam & GOG, both kinda require you to be online… cos it’s, you know, digital distribution heh.

Speaking of GOG, Shattered Haven is also an unpopular sale choice heh.

You say digital distribution, I say DRM *runs*

Well admittedly Steam is a digital distribution platform that includes DRM, but GOG is completely DRM free.

Now if you don’t mind I need to go back to planning how to convince my brother to play Witcher 1 that I purchased and downloaded from GOG (yes I can do that since it’s DRM free).

Please .. if we wanted 720 p we would boot up an 8 yr old machine. One meter from a 32 inch screen it is clearly noticeable.

If you are sitting that close to a screen that size then I’m sure you’re on first name basis with your optometrist.

        i have a 52″ that I sit 1.5m from.
although that might just be cus my mancave is a bit squashed since Ive moved my PC table in there.
but im happier closer to the screen than I am sitting far away.

How many developers does it take to change a light bulb? none, it’s a hardware problem.

Hey, you don’t see me coming to your house and telling you how to change a light bulb, just how many light bulbs you need to install.
