A champion bug sees Gragas removed from the League of Legends World Championships due

For the first time in my eSports career, I’ve actively been paying attention to the 2015 League of Legends World Championships. After putting my pride aside, I’ve not only been watching but also playing a bit of League of Legends. On Saturday, I sat down to watch Fnatic versus Edward Gaming in their Best of Five series for the Quarterfinals hosted at Wembley Arena in London. Game one was rather exciting with team fights being traded back and forth, and Fnatic came out on top. I’d love to offer more insight, but I still have little to no clue what’s going on.

One thing I did understand was what happened in game two, because we’re so used to delays. Gragas, which has become a rather popular pick for certain teams, had an issue with his “Q” spell, which was apparently a common bug. This brought Worlds to a standstill for an hour as Riot official referees tried to rectify the issue. Once it was determined that the bug could not be fixed for that game they decided to have a remake with new picks and bans. Here’s what the analysts had to say:

On a side note, the voice discussing the issue may sound very familiar; that’s Trevor “Qu1cksh0t” Henry, a South African. Officials said they would look into the issue and further investigate the champion, and if this was an isolated case they would rule it as an anomaly, but it seems the problem persisted and now Gragas has been removed from competitive play.

Riot releases a statement

Many people were in the dark as Riot made their final decisions regarding the hero. With the competition reaching its final stages, a decision had to be made and now a few teams are at a disadvantage due to his removal.

After further investigations following the Gragas bug and remake during Game 2 of the Fnatic vs. EDG series, we have more information about how the bug works and the likelihood of it reoccurring. We know that champion disables are disruptive to team strategies and didn’t want to rush a disable when the exact cause and the likelihood of the bug occurring were unknown.

Having looked into this further and isolated the cause, we now know the bug is more likely to recur than we initially thought. We don’t want to endanger the integrity of the upcoming games or risk additional remakes, so we are are disabling Gragas for the remainder of the tournament. The bug is also reproducible on Lux and Ziggs, and so to be safe, we are disabling them for the remainder of the tournament.

We have chosen to do this at the end of Quarters and with a full week before Semis so that the teams will have time to adjust their strategies. We know that Gragas has been a high priority pick so far in Worlds and we want to make sure all four teams have the chance to adjust as necessary.

Strangely enough Fnatic picked up Gragas after the game two remake, but the bug did not reoccur for that game. The tournament continues in five days time, which may or may not be enough time to rectify the issues, but until Riot releases further information Gragas is not available in the current hero pool. Gragas now joins fellow Champions Lux and Ziggs in the non-playable waiting room, but the effect of Gragas is far worse than the other two.

This is the one big reason why competitive eSports could severely suffer. Bugs. Forget match fixing. Bugs like this could prevent a lot of people from ever getting in to watching eSports the way they do other sports

Sports like Rugby and Cricket also have bugs…known more commonly as Referees and Umpires making horrible decisions 😛

Yeah the “Craig Joubert” bug is especially hated in Scotland at the moment. They are demanding a patch

Would have thought World Rugby learnt their lessons on releasing buggy versions on the world after the Bryce Lawrence Alpha debacle of 2011 😛
