With just a few months left to go until the year runs out, Sony’s silence on their next-gen console has been baffling to say the least. Whereas Microsoft’s Xbox Series X has been revealed in a surprisingly transparent fashion with regular updates that have helped chart its path towards release, Sony has been more tight-lipped than a Mafia made man testifying in court.
We already know what’s inside the console, we’ve heard system architect Mark Cerny’s silky-smooth voice inform us of Sony’s goals and we’ve been teased with new solid-state drive hardware that is supposed to be a game-changer for the industry. What we don’t know, is how all of this will combine, what the end result will look like or what we can even expect to play on that system on launch day.
That current status quo might change as early as next week, as reports claim that a PlayStation 5 reveal is finally coming. Former Kotaku heavyweight and now Bloomberg reporter Jason Schrier (alongside Takashi Mochizuki) claims that a PS5 event will be held on June 3, with VentureBeat further corroborating those rumours according to their own sources.
What the event will give fans, is a look at the console and what it’s capable of, but don’t expect more than that. Details on how much the PS5 will cost and its exact release date, will be revealed later in the year as Sony begins the march to the next generation of gaming with events that will roll out in the “coming weeks and months.”
Sony is currently trailing far behind Microsoft, as the home of the Xbox brand has been focused not only on detailing what the Xbox Series X will offer but also a deeper dive into the ecosystem of that console through its primary currency: Next-gen games. We’ve already had one Xbox Series X showcase, more will come on a monthly schedule and July will be the make or break month for the console when Microsoft’s first-party studios reveal the projects they’ve been working on ever since they became members of the Xbox brand.
A Sony event detailing how it plans to oppose its biggest rival in the gaming industry with its own selection of games and unique hardware should see the race to the finish line look a lot more exciting.

So wana get some info on some of the more rational people and their expectations for next gen consoles, seems allot of people think next gen means “photo realism” graphics at 120fps 8K….sure the UE 5 tech demo was a good example on what’s close to photo realism on a console but games utilizing that engine is what +-5 years away? What launches on the console at the end of the year? well know about Xbox plans but none of those titles screams “next gen”.
What is next gen games? what’s your expectations on next gen consoles? Graphical fidelity vs Refresh Rate vs Resolution vs Load times?

I’m honestly not expecting a MASSIVE bump in visuals. What I’m after, is a console that focuses on quality of life improvements for the player.
Something that can make the experience of a game feel and play better? I’m down for that.

I just need shorter load times. Odyssey is taking ages to get into the game and fast travel takes almost longer than just to travel.

I get it…always something to improve and make gaming easier and more investing for a player ..also not expecting that much of a difference in visuals, not with what Rockstar did on the likes of RDR2 or what even Kojima achieved on that Fox engine way back.
So what will truly define next generations gaming, is this where VR vs AR enters?

Me too! After playing through both Pillars of Eternity games, I couldn’t be more psyched for the improved loading times!!! Visuals are good now (& of course, developers will want to continue to improve them), but I’m more interested in things like improved AI & the aforementioned load times!

Well, If that Unreal engine is a yard stick, that’s significant. Allow me to explain : GI. Global Illumination. I started Using this tech back in 2006. I started with a little program called Vray. A 3rd party plugin for 3ds Max. At the time it was a small plugin with minimal market share and it was only available for Max. There were two options for light bouncing. Radiosity ( Raytracing ) and GI. Raytracing never stood a chance next to the speed of GI in terms of lighting. Where Raytracing has forged it’s own separate path is in the realm of reflection’s, caustics, refraction’s and that sort of thing. Consoles are now capable of both.And it’s real time, No more baked lighting. Although I suspect it will be a combination.
The IO speeds on the PS5 allow for the high speed data transfer of huge resolution assets both in terms of geometry and textures. You know when you watched Avatar and everything looked so beautiful as far as the eye could see ? That’s what PS5 is touting. No popping in and out of assets. All in real time.
How is that not a bump in visuals ? I suspect the Series X won’t be far off and will surpass the PS5 in certain cases. Now this is the idealistic vision, and my understanding of what this new technology is from Sony’s perspective.
Vray is the Industry standard in terms of VFX lighting. It’s available for very major 3d package on the market and has been used on countless films.

It all depends on how you look at the visuals, are you just streaming the visuals on your PC in low quality or on a monster 65″ or 75″ Display in 4K HDR
The thing with console players is that probably 90% of us play games on TV screens, those screens has improved significantly in the past 5 years. The latest 8K technology allow refresh rate of 120fps at 4K hdr resolution. Take into consideration this is on a 65″ or 75″ TV and the improvements is enormous.
Visuals is probably more important than the sound technology, so don’t discard the improvements in the visuals.
People tend to forget that with the launch of the Ps4 the visuals was at 1024×768 and 4K was just a dream. TV manufacturers is already punting 10K, and yes there is a argument as to do we / don’t we really need it. The point is that the latest TV technology has outgrown the consoles, and it is fantastic to know that the latest consoles will cater for that technology
So visuals for me is important and definitely noticeable, The second thing is load times, but nothing stops anyone from putting a SSD into there PS4 now. SSD technology however has also improved so the latest consoles cater for that, however it is still very, very expensive
Just like any other technology, be it your normal TV, PC etc technology does improve over time. Consoles has reach the end of that live time. The next gen consoles is ahead in technology in terms of what most people can afford, but give it a year or 2 and the changes will be staggering.
So what am I most looking forward to.
A) Visual improvement
B) Visual improvement at a higher FPS

You have a good point about getting info from rational people. I tend to find it’s the more technical stuff where you get the non bias info from. Real world example, A prominent figure from the industry comes out and says one thing and the very next day, a channel on YouTube will pop up and feature a bunch of so called experts disputing what said person has said quoting facts from a news source which is bias against the competitor.
It’s an all out marketing war. At the end of the day, the market will decide.Anyway, Ironically, the channels I’ve been watching seem to be PC channels.

I would love to play a COD that doesn’t make my console sound like a jet airplane! That and load times is my main gripes. Games already look amazing on the PS4, so don’t mind if they look the same on 5.
