A third of PS4 owners are turncoats

Who knew 30 pieces of silver came in such a nice pouch

Guess what, the console war will never end. For the rest of eternity we will debate the virtues of one piece of tech to a fairly similar other piece of tech. In the latest battle of the console war, a Nielsen survey indicates that PS4 owners aren’t all necessarily PlayStation fanboys.

According to a report from Nielsen (via Re/code), gamers aren’t as brand-loyal as the online fanboys might make you think. In their survey, Nielsen found that 31% of PS4 owners didn’t own the PS3, but did own an Xbox 360 or Wii. 17% didn’t even own a last-generation console.

It’s important to note that the survey only indicated what consumers currently own – those who sold their PS3s for the cash needed to buy a PS4 would appear as non-PS3 owners. That said, if you’re going to sell your last gen console, surely you’d sell the one you’re using the least or have the fewest games on – Xbox fans would keep that console if it was still worthwhile for them, while they might sell it if they generally tended towards PlayStation anyway.

At launch, the biggest titles for new generation consoles were all cross-platform – games like COD: Ghosts and Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. If you’re ready to upgrade and want to play with you friends, it makes sense that the PS4’s lower price point might have played a larger role for gamers. Neither console had fantastic exclusives at launch, so it was simply a matter of gamers picking up the console that they thought would give them the greatest access to games at the lowest price point.

Now that the Xbox One has the option of buying it for the much cheaper price by axing the Kinect, it will be interesting to see if this brings parity on the market. In South Africa, the Xbox One without Kinect is actually cheaper than the PS4, and it comes with two games bundled in. Will this be enough to bring people back to the Xbox brand, or are we all deluded thinking that anyone actually cares about brands anymore? Is it truly all about the games… and the price?

I have a PC, an Xbox 360, I had a Wii (still have an imported NTSC one), I had a PSone… I’ll go PS4 this gen (if I can afford it), so I’m a gamer, not a freaking fan boy!

Agreed. I want a PS4 for one (maybe two) reasons…The Last of Us and Destiny. The rest I can comfortably live without.

I sold my Xbox 360 to buy my PS4…. And my PS3 sits right beneath it on the second shelf, doesn’t get a lot of love but would rather keep it than the 360…
Those two bundled games are tokens or have they changed it to physical yet? This is Africa not a lot of people can download a 20-60 gig game…. Just saying

Quality indie titles are thick with atmosphere and gameplay. Not difficult to see why they’re doing so well when you have games like Super Meat Boy, Don’t Starve, The Swapper, The Binding of Isaac, Spelunky, etc
I actually pity “gamers” that don’t play Indie titles because these titles still represent gaming in it’s purest form as they are crafted from a pure love of gaming by the the most passionate of gamers.

My 4mb line at my house is beyond crap!! I tried an uncapped line on it and it was terribly inconsistent!! So now I back to a unshaped line…. And boy they can get pretty expensive if you want a lot of gigs on it!! So I will stick to the disc model thank you….

100gb unshaped data costs R200 on Afrihost but i prefer WebAfrica’s 60gb+60gb offer. Both are restricted to 40mb lines though.

Have no idea but 20mb is dropping to R299 from next month I believe.

By that time there should be some decent games also. I waited till 2011 to buy a PS3 and the amount of games that I could play and wanted to play on it was just pure bliss!! Hopefully the ONE can do the same for me!!

Apart from my pc, all I want is a Wii U to play the Zelda and Mario games, and to get access to the Virtual Console. As a master race gamer I feel that I have missed out on a swathe of timeless console classics.

I know lots of PC gamers that ditched the PC platform for the PS4 because of things like 8gb GDRR5 and a “powerhouse” GPU but all they do these days is moan about frame rates, resolution and cost of games. Apparently trade-ins on next-gen games aren’t that great either. I guess that’s what you get for going all fanboi before a purchase.

I’ve had a PS4 since release and on average I spend R200 per game, have probably bought 12 games at least, and I buy my all my games as new releases, if not pre-ordered. If you are clever about it then it can be a lot cheaper than PC gaming.

I have thought about buying an XBox 1 but there is nothing notable or any of the games that makes me want to buy one. The list of games I am waiting to buy on the PS4 is growing but I just don’t see anything on the XBox that has the same pull.

I think I may be more a power user than a gamer? I just can not imagine letting my PC go. It just does so much more than a console. I will sell my console for a Smart TV though.

No man, I have a Smart TV and all I ever use it for is the News24 App. The YouTube app is clunky and dated. You are better off getting an air mouse with kb for your PC.

I actually want to get it for the Plex Media Server app. I have heard good things mostly. I stream all my movies, series etc via DLNA to my PS3 atm, but the thing has cynovia and kills my soul.

Bit crap that the YouTube app sucks =/ Will definitely go into a Dion Wired or something and test this all out before actually purchasing it. Well not from Dion Wired of course… Damn place is for rich people wanting to burn money.

Truth be told that the best Smart TV experience be had from the Xbox 360 Apps. It’s so much faster and fluid than the Samsung. The Samsung 3D Blu Ray players come with USB and the same smart apps. I think that’s a better option to look at.

Not sure when the info was gained but with 10 million consoles sold that would give you around 2.5 million. It’s like half of what Xbox one sold if i’m not wrong . Am I the only one that wishes that MS would sell more so that Sony will be kept honest . More competition means cheaper stuff 🙂 right I think I had to much coffee
