Activision’s creepy new Face tech

It seems that just about everybody’s been working on new face rendering technology. We’ve seen creepy CGI faces from Nvidia, and creepy old faces from Quantic Dream. Now take a gander at Activision’s new real-time face-rendering tech, which they showed off at GDC this week.

Take a look:

Now the interesting thing here is that unlike other demoes, this isn’t running on some pie-in-the-sky supercomputer; according to Activision it’s running on a two year old laptop. they say that on a GeForce GTX 680, in DirectX 11, this all works at up to 180 fps.

“We will show how each detail is the secret for achieving reality. For us, the challenge goes beyond entertaining; it’s more about creating a medium for better expressing emotions, and reaching the feelings of the players,” said  Activision tech director Jorge Jimenez in a blog post

It’s really pretty impressive, though worth pointing out that while this all runs right now, there’s little chance of it showing up in a game soon; this is done without things like physics, or well, game. and of course, there’s the lack of hair.

The most surprising thing of all, of course, is that Activision’s actually got some new tech.

These floating heads are starting to creep me out. It’s all I dream about lately. Surreal floaty heads mumbling randomly at me. Quite disturbing really

Yeah, this one isn’t as impressive. The way the head jiggles like it’s made out of rubber just casts us back to the uncanny valley. So far, the Quantic Dream and Kojima’s Fox engine have impressed me the most.

Geoff linked it at the top ^_^ Just ICT’s data, rendered by a different tech, not very impressively so though.

Whoa you mean Activision is actually putting money into R&D!? I guess this gen is really almost over, now get used to this tech coz its the only thing you going to see in COD for the next 7- 10 years! Talk about pure profit.

Maybe I’m the only one not getting it, but this is exactly the same as the NVIDIA tech that was shown off just a short while ago. Same face, same answers, everything!
