Where were you when you first saw a PS2 console? I remember quite clearly, way back in December of 2000, sitting with my parents at some dude’s house in Johannesburg, when he unveiled his big bulky addition to his lounge that he had imported. Good times. But now, it’s RIP time.

Sony announced earlier last week that the console would cease to be and become bereft of life in it’s homeland of Japan.

And according to the Guardian, the PS2 will soon be pining for the fjords across the rest of the world, as production shall also cease for those global territories. Since the 2000 debut of the console, it’s done damn well for itself, ushering in a new generation of home entertainment devices and sticking around for the long run, amidst an entirely new field of newer and faster consoles.

In fact, the PS2 is the greatest selling console of all time, selling over 150 million units and over a billion of the ten thousand games in its library. So if you’re still hankering for a console with which to jam some Viewtiful Joe, or God of War II (which is still the best one, by the way) now might be the time to do so if you’re looking to grab a mint in box version of the juggernaut games device.

Plus, it like totally plays DVDs. And second hand games, unlike its rumoured big brother PS4.
