Alan Wake could still get a sequel

Alan Wake, the survival-horror action game that began its life as an Xbox 360 exclusive, became a firm fan favourite when it was eventually released in 2010 after a protracted series of delays. There was a standalone bit of DLC for the game in Alan Wake’s American Nightmares, and very little news on the writer whose fiction came to life since then. It was always meant to be a series of games though – and a sequel may still come.

Right now, Remedy is still very hard at work on the (delayed!) Xbox One exclusive, Quantum Break – but after that game (and its inevitable DLC) are all wrapped up, they may jump back on the Alan Wake horse.

“For Alan Wake, from the get-go, we assumed there was going to be a sequel and we mapped things further out when it came to character, story, details and focus changes,” Remedy’s creative director and Max Payne model Sam Lake told Polygon.

“Near the end of Alan Wake, we were sitting down and talking about the sequel and where we should be taking it, on a detailed level. More or less straight from getting Alan Wake shipped, we were working on a sequel and planning on a sequel.”

It would have carried on from the game’s frustrating cliffhanger of an ending, and allowed players to rewrite the world around them, which all sounds a bit too ambitious for last-gen stuff. But now that Quantum Break is getting prepped for release, Remedy may revisit Alan Wake.

We are in a place where we are starting to look into the future and starting to have discussions about what is next,” he said.

“Among other things, we are discussing the possibility of an Alan Wake sequel with multiple partners, but nothing has been decided.

“I would love to do that. It feels that time has only refined the ideas of what the sequel would be, which is great. It’s almost, in some ways and on some level, that all of this extra time to think it about it has made it tastier and more exciting.”

If it ends up with a publisher that’s not Microsoft, it could end up being a multiplatform game. That is, of course, if it happens at all. I implore you to read the full, extensive interview at Polygon, where you can also see some of the Alan Wake sequel’s prototypes in action.

Alan Wake was undoubtedly one of the best survival games I have played, simply because of it’s unique story, American Nightmare had an awesome series of scenes, loved the TV cameo with Sam Lake himself, would really love to see this come to life, but wouldn’t like to see it as another bloody tunnel vision based exclusive…damn filthy, bloody exclusives…

At least it’s a console exclusive, so no DRM. 😛

Hahaha!! Yeah well… I’m still a little upset about the feedback from Rockstars’ social club account hacking thing…or should I say lack thereof….

I got the first one on PC through GOG but never got round to playing it. Should probably rectify that…

Great game. Deserves a sequel! It’s on my ‘play again soon’ list in my ongoing “Nostalgia Gaming Tour”. 🙂

You know, Looking at Remedy’s past… I don’t think they should do a sequel. I loved the game, and American Nightmare… but the last time they made a sequel, it was Max Payne 2 Which, looking back, just wasn’t as good as the Original. Remedy as a studio have great Ideas, but those ideas are not suited to sequelisation. But hey, that’s just my opinion.
