Analyst Sides with Sony Motion Control, says Natal too Casual

For some reason the videogame industry is peppered with people who have opinions, and want them known. When you work for a business focus firm, instead being called “opinionated” you get to be called an analyst. This time, that analyst is Doug Creutz of Cowen and Company who, in an interview with Gamasutra had a few words to say about the new motion control schemes debuted by Sony and Microsoft.

Which did he favour? Well, he thinks Sony’s offering is “superior from a gaming perspective”.

“Natal appeared to me to be a technological solution in search of a problem,” he added. “Do I really care if I can navigate my Netflix queue without using a controller? “I had a very hard time envisioning playing Modern Warfare 3 using Natal. By contrast, I had a very easy time envisioning it (and enjoying it) using Sony’s control/motion capture scheme,” he chided.

He accused Microsoft of trying to steal away Nintendo’s market share, saying “Microsoft appears to be trying to steal casual gamers away from Nintendo, which is a difficult proposition given that you’re essentially asking casual gamers to upgrade twice during the cycle (assuming they already own a Wii).”

“In contrast, Sony is squarely targeting the core gamer market, which is what they need to be doing,” the analyst concluded.

You know what? I agree with the guy. As excited as I am for Natal and the technology behind it, as it stands right now it just seems that Sony’s hardware is better suited for gamer’s games. As a long-suffering Wii owner I’m yet to be convinced that motion control is really superior to the tried-and-trusted conventional controller – but the closer we get to 1:1 control the closer I come to being a convert.

Contrary to some people’s belief that we’re a bunch of Xbots – and your belief that we’re Sony fanboys – all of us are in fact devout Atari adherents. The Atari 2600 FTW!

“He accused Microsoft of trying to steal away Nintendo’s market share”
lol and sony aren’t trying to do the same?!

but yeah, i still think sony’s approach is far more practical (and affordable) than natal in terms of gaming.

Wait.. he accused MS of trying to steal away Nintendo’s marketshare… and that Sony is aiming for the core???

MS.. does something new and different…

Sony… bring out something that does what the Wii does… the only difference is that it has a coloured light thing on the end.. otherwise nothing new.

It seems like Sony is aiming for EXACTLY the same crowd Nintendo have by bringing out something that is pretty much exactly the same.

Any kind of motion controlling device at this stage is
aimed at the casual market? I’m sorry, but I find it very hard to believe that playing modern warfare with that lady speedstick roll-on tube is any more practical.Motion controllers of any kind just won’t work with those types of games.Unless you make a home-made gun with a gyromouse
for headtracking and an lcd mounted on the gun like one dude did for his pc which was AWESOME!!! Too bad i forgot the link now 🙁

That’s the one. I just think it’s brilliant.
It’s got the forward movement sorted out and everything.
Apart from the one annoying cable, I would have so much
    fun with something like that
    😛

heres a thought.. IF the natal is so crap…Why was Natal playable on Burnout Paradise (which in my opinion is a fantastic start).. Where’s the vibrator Sony was using only worked on some unpolished poligon game. If the really wanted to make a impact. They should of used it in COD/KZ2 or resistance.. I mean c’mon

its not about natal being crap, its all about practicality.

whereas natal does look interesting and has a lot of potential, its lacking one thing that all gaming devices have had since day one… a physical controller.

and its still in development, and as most people agree, it was thrown together very quickly for e3. hence the piss poor demo.
