One of the oddities about Lazygamer in the local gaming scene is that we’re all classed as hardcore gamers and yet we still love Nintendo and the Wii.

We know we’re in the minority here because we can view how many reads an article gets and Nintendo articles get far far far less than anything else. Hell if we were only in this for page views we’d only talk about Skyrim, Mass Effect, Call of Duty and Forza vs GT5 all day long.

But that’s not the point, we do this because we love gaming and sometimes we just need to tell you why Nintendo are sometimes awesome. Not always, but quite often.

Are you part of the crowd who are so upset that Mass Effect 3 has day one DLC? How about that patch you had to install last night on that brand spanking new game you bought? Does it drive you mad that the testing and quality assurance parts of game development appear to have been outsourced to the local pet shop recently?

Well think about this, when was the last time your Wii title needed to be patched on day one, or had DLC shoved down your throat to properly complete a game.

How would you feel if you finished Super Mario Galaxy and had a terrible ending only to then get told you can download alternate endings for a price?

Well you haven’t because it’s against Nintendo’s policy to do such things as can be clearly demonstrated by quotes from Reggie Fils-Aime and Satoru Iwata.

First let’s see what Reggie has to say

We’re unwilling to sell is a piece of game upfront and, if you will, force a consumer to buy more later. That’s what they don’t want to do, and I completely agree. I think the consumer wants to get, for their money, a complete experience, and then we have opportunities to provide more on top of that.

That’s pretty clear and Iwata rounds it off with

In terms of that priority (DLC), we cannot, and should not, ask our consumers to embrace the situation where they are required to make excessive payments. Doing such things might be goof for short-term profit, but it will not serve our mid-term and long-term business developments.

In regards to the second quote I think it fits perfectly with how Activision bled Guitar Hero dry. Granted they made a fortune but in doing so they killed a much loved title. Yes we all know they’ll resurrect it in the future but that’s not going to completely rid the company of the foul stench of abuse.

Anyway this post is simply here to make you think twice the next time you feel like abusing Nintendo shortly after complaining about the current state of day on DLC and patches.

I’m interested to see if Nintendo can make the leap to mature games with the Wii-U, my personal belief is that they’ll fail and fail hard but I’ve been wrong before and I hope that I’m wrong again

.. no I don’t know why I stuck another eye on Reggie.. I really really don’t
