Another PS3 Game Has A Mandatory 5GB Install?

I didn’t post about the Devil May Cry 5GB / 20 minute install mainly because I can see the logic behind it and it would have just caused people to flame the PS3 some more.

However when the latest rumour that pops up is that Hot Shots Golf is going to require a 20 minute install as well it becomes time to flame the console.

Console gamers don’t like installs and 5GB installs is insane. So you can have a max of 8 games with no media installed and then when you buy your ninth game you have to uninstall a previous one. What if you like 9 games at once?

This is a really horrible trend that Sony should stamp out right now. There is no excuse for this.

    This is one of your sillier arguments Lazy, 8 games max huh?

    I have over 15 games and none of them requires more than a few hundred MB install, now 2 games come out that do it and all of a sudden EVERY game requires a 5GB install?

    Plus i have a 60gb which means 12 games, some people have 250GB HDD in their machines.

    If 5GB costs me 20min at start up to save on loading times i would definitely do it.

    And it’s not a trend that Sony have started, the devs decide to do it, and with good reason.

    One thing I dont understand is why its needed in the first place. Blu-Ray has a faster read speed so it’s supposed to beat the Xbox360 load times without the install. But in some games the Xbox360 actualy beats the PS3 in load times.

    @Banana
    Maybe more and more games will require HD installs so maybe Lazy Gamer has an argument. Maybe future games will require more than 5 gig.

    Correct me if I’m wrong, is it true that the install gets removed from the hard drive once you put another game in?

    I did say that Sony should stamp it out to show that I realise it is not Sony, however if this does become the norm then the 8 games max does exist.

    The standard PS3 now is 40GB and if it becomes the norm to install 5GB for every game then you will only get 8 games.

    The logic is sound :p

    If I wanted to install stuff before playing, I’d still be playing games on my PC.

    I have no problem with optional installs, but making them mandatory is ridiculous.

    @SlippyMadFrog… Blu ray only beats DVD on read spead at very small file levels. Anything else, it is dog slow.

    Also remember that the PS3 has half the memory for the data to stream into, and I think this is a way for lazy devs to get around that.

    Not a huge issue, if it helps getting PS3 games of the production lines faster, but the “go make a sandwitch while it loads’ comments from Capcom rubs me the wrong way.

    Rather explain to all why they went this route and get on with life.

    Each system has a pro and con to it. It is time that people get over themselves and get on with it.

    @j4nr1k- I agree with you. These installs should be OPTIONAL! i would not mind a an install. The Xbox360 ELITE has plenty of space for up to 20 game installs. That whirring noise from the dvd-rom drive gets to me sometimes. If we have the hardware then it must be utilised.

    Heres a cool idea that just popped up. They can run trailers during the install time to keep us busy. Game trailers, movie trailers, even music videos. It will help to lower the cost of games.

    I wouldnt mind waiting for a 20-30 minute install on my console as long as it’s going to make my gaming experience better… 🙂

    @Fox1: With Devil May Cry 4’s 5GB install, they are showing the story of DMC up to now. So you can decide to watch and refresh you’re memory of what happened in the previous 3 games, or yuo can go make a sandwich.

    Honestly, I don’t know what the issue is with this. If it spares loading times then it’s good.

    @Naudran,

    Like I said I didn’t post about the DMC one because it seems fair enough but no one seems to be mentioning the oddidty that is Hot Shots Gold needing 5GB’s of HDD…

    I’ll go out on a limb and suggest it’s probably the access times and not the transfer rate that’s the issue. If it improved the game experience I’d say sure, do it who cares?

    The standard HDD now is 40GB, but as we all know Sony is changing that constantly.

    I don’t think you’ll ever reach a 8 game max. Devs are not going to do this as a norm, if they haven’t needed it for COD4, etc then it’s not 100% needed.

    hmmm… Well i don’t mind waiting 20 min to play a game… makes loading easier… and on average I only play 1 game at a time, then finish it, then pawn it off… then get another game… my collection of games on ps3 is only 3 😀
