Both Sony’s PlayStation Plus Instant Game Collection and Microsoft’s Games for Gold offer free games to users as a reward of sorts for paying the monthly subscription. And each of them wavers. PlayStation’s Plus’ IGC started off strong, offering – at the time – new games like Hitman Absolution. Since then, we’ve seen the quality of games plummet until last year, when we got retail games like Injustice and the rather good Infamous: First Light. The expectation was that this year, Microsoft’s Games with Gold would up its proverbial game. It hasn’t.
Let’s be blunt: February’s Games with Gold are a little underwhelming. Here’s what subscribers are in for next month.
Xbox One owners will be treated to the bizarre indie game, It Draws a Red Box, otherwise known as #IDARB. It’s a strange, rather dynamic throwback platformer-cum-sports game that was built off of Twitter suggestions, it’s slightly mental, and makes for a great drunken party game.
Xbox 360 owners who haven’t already played StarBreeze’s excellent, emotional adventure Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons are in for next month’s very best game – which, incidentally, was part of the PlayStation Plus Instant Game Collection last year.
The last game, available to Xbox 360 owners in the second half of the month is the stealthy sniping shooter Sniper Elite V2, which is essentially a bit of unfulfilling, grim and gratuitous gore porn.
The whole selection is a little underwhelming. Though we don’t know what Sony’s PlayStation Plus games this month will be, hopefully they maintain last year’s late momentum, and deliver a handful of games that make people happy to be subscribers.

The Xbone offerings are absolute garbage and hardly worth a look every month and this is a really bad month for the X360 as well. Hopefully Sony keep us entertained.

May I also have one, please?
I love cookies. I do do refer to them as biscuits at home. In my private time, I call the adventures. As I sit in the dark and not look at what type of adventure I will be grabbing… laughing as the sun sets on my toes.

Another month that I don’t feel bad about not having gold on my X360!
I have Brothers a tale of two sons on Steam and I have Sniper Elite 3 as well.

Got sniper elite V2 on ps3, will download it on Xbox just to see if there is any difference in performance.

Yeah, those are a little underwhelming. Brothers is an awesome game and Sniper V2 is underrated, in my opinion… But wow, XB1 owners are getting majorly shafted! Hope they have something big in store for March then!
On an aside, and maybe that’s why the lame XB1 freebie, there are some INSANE XB1 sales now on the Xbox Live store for Gold members. Like the following:
Dragon Age: Inquisition (Deluxe Edition) – R349
Metro Redux – R169 for each of the 2 games
Titanfall – R169
Battlefield 4 (Premium Edition with all dlc) – R189
There are alot more, but those are just the ones that really stood out for me – I mean they are some great prices for what are regarded as AAA products. DA:I in particular is only 3 months old and it’s less than half price?! Wow! Get ’em while they’re hot (does mean you have major 20 – 40 Gb downloads for each, though… So prepare your router).

O_o wow those are some great specials
Rock789
January 29, 2015 at 10:09
I know, right?! It’s crazy! And it extends to new digital releases too… Although those are the actual prices and not just Gold subscriber specials like above. I mean, they have Saints Row IV Re-Elected for R215 and Resident Evil HD for R129. Seriously!! That surprised the hell out of me because on PSN, Saints Row is R599 and Resident Evil is R299. That’s a helluva lot cheaper comparing XBL to PSN!!
I really like the pricing scheme MS seem to be going with for XBL – digital SHOULD be cheaper than physical because you’re not buying the disk ffs. But on PSN, for example, COD:AW is R1099 whereas it’s R899 in the shops… I dunno how they can justify the prices on some of those games on PSN… That’s why I wait for the specials if I wanna buy digital on PSN – otherwise, it’s just too pricey.

January 29, 2015 at 10:15
I know, right! And that’s the new Titanfall Deluxe Edition – the game plus every piece of dlc (maps, armour, etc) ever released! You are literally paying for something that, in its entirety when released, was worth over R1000.
It really does pay to wait…

I played S2, it was, good, not brilliant.
Fails at a 3rd person shooter, fails at a stealth game, excels at giving satisfaction for landing glorious sniper shot

Playing the third one. Snipers heaven. If detected run away and snipe some more. Zero stealth needed really. Love how they show an x-ray when you hit a target.

XBOne game is a weird one; other two I don’t think are underwhelming. Many takers for those especially if you haven’t played them. Sniper is going to be great as I don’t have that one.
I actually unpacked the ORIGINAL Xbox a week ago and the PS2 – this year a little more retro love needed. So pffft to all you free games 🙂

I’m no geologist, but I’m pretty sure that is not gold. Unless that is what you were going for with “underwhelming”. It is Pyrite aka Fool’s Gold. Got 50% for geology so I pretty much know my shit.

Problem with PS4 and Xbox one is the relatively small pool of games they have to give away.

Seriously Microsoft! Assassins Creed Black Flag and Tomb Raider are old enough to be given free through Gold on Xbox One. You just being the greedy hell holes you usually are.
