Remember Leland Yee? He’s a pretty staunchly anti-videogame senator who believes that the digital violence in videogames is corrupting America’s youth and turning the country in to a nation of sociopaths. He tried to pass a bill that would ban the sale of violent video games to children.
“Gamers have got to just quiet down,” Yee said in 2013 on the debate about violent games.“Gamers have no credibility in this argument. This is all about their lust for violence and the industry’s lust for money. This is a billion-dollar industry. This is about their self-interest.”
A year later, he became embroiled in a deliciously hypocritical saga that had him, and a group of co-accused, caught up in accusations of gun-running, money laundering and actual, real-life murder.
The guy has now been sentenced for his crimes – to five years in prison for racketeering, weapons smuggling and other charges. Yee pleaded guilty to the crimes, and of abusing his position and political influence to line his pockets.
According to the sentencing document, Yee’s dishonesty and abuse of power “demonstrate a venal attitude toward his position as an elected public official and a willingness to abuse his position of trust in any number of ways.
“The crimes that you committed have resulted in essentially an attack on democratic institutions,” District Judge Charles Breyer told Yee. “This is a serious, serious injury to a governmental institution.”
Essentially, he abused the public trust and his position to stay in power – and probably got some people killed along the way; directly or indirectly.
Games though. Games are the problem.
