Apparently the PS4 won’t overheat

Twisted Firestarter

We’ve heard previous rumours about the PlayStation 4 possible suffering from overheating and while all these rumours have been unsubstantiated the guys over at Dualshockers decided it was a good idea to approach a developer and ask them about the rumours.

The developer they decided to approach was Digital Extremes, the makers of Warframe who had the following to say

“We’ve been using a bunch of dev kits. They’ve been on almost all the time, sometimes even over night. They’ve always stayed cool, never even gotten warm so It has never suggested the threat of a problem. We have had no problems with any of the dev kits throughout development.”

Which is all good and well but then they continued on with (emphasis mine)

“As far as I know, the specs and cooling of the current dev kits are the same as the final retail consoles, and I never saw one getting any hotter than a PS3 or a Xbox 360. Our consoles never had problems of that sort, and if you’re talking about that picture with the red line, I never saw something like that.”

Now when talking about the stability of a console I would strongly recommend not bringing up the Xbox 360 as your shining example after the disaster that was the reliability of the initial Xbox 360’s.

So do I think that the PlayStation 4 has overheating issues?

Absolutely not, I played for hours on them in London and they were left on for 3 days non-stop and were absolutely cool to the touch at all times. This doesn’t really mean anything but if there was a known problem I’m sure Activision would have been told about it and would have taken measures to protect the consoles.

I agree. They are silent and never get even slightly warm. When I was on leave for a week, I think mine was off for maybe 3-4 hours a day, if not less (I usually fell asleep watching netflix). Not once did it get warm. Modern cooling systems actually work now.

I forgot. Which is your console of preference again Gav?
Me not being a console gamer, but actually owning a PS that I never use, both have great appeal. (bring on the arguments)

I have all the current consoles.. I prefer the controller on the Xbox 360 so I go that way for any multi platforms.. I despise the Dualshock 3

            November 5, 2013 at 12:24

Its still not as good as the Xbox controller. Even the current one. Its a big step up, but it’s not there yet.

            November 5, 2013 at 12:25

The Xbox One controller is better for long term use in shooters… but can a controller being a bit better really be the selling point?

          • ToshZA

            November 5, 2013 at 12:29

Not just shooters. Pretty much any game, fighters, rpg’s etc. Its fairly universal.

However, I think it’s not a major selling point. Its a great advantage, but I’d be able to live with a worse controller for a better console & games.

          • TiMsTeR1033

            November 5, 2013 at 12:33

What if made a way to use xbox controller on ps4…

            November 5, 2013 at 12:36

Then I’d sell it as a standalone product and make millions, if I were you.

            November 5, 2013 at 12:31

That’s the thing. I’d never pick a console (if I was to buy one) on the basis of the controller, but I do think that all these little things add up in the end. Controller, exclusives and such. But to each his own. A lot of it is also personal preference.

          • Spathi

            November 5, 2013 at 12:31

And “better” being so subjective, especially for the next gen? Also, I think once the support for the touch pad begins to take off (like the map scrolling for AC IV), the PS controller may be “better”.

          • TiMsTeR1033

            November 5, 2013 at 12:32

YES!! Dude playing an uncomfy controller sucks! I never need breaks with Current Xbox 360 controller. has weight comfort, thumbs in exactly right place! Dualshock 3 felt terrible! Dual shock 4 will hopefully feel better to me..

          • Gavin Mannion

            November 5, 2013 at 12:24

It’s a huge improvement. The sticks still get uncomfortable after a few hours but the controller itself is great.

          • Unalighned John (JJ)

            November 5, 2013 at 12:25

I have an Xbox 360 controller for my pc and I too cannot stand the Dualshock. But what of the next gen consoles? Or too soon to ask, seeing as the bone is yet to come?

          • TiMsTeR1033

            November 5, 2013 at 12:26

The thumbsticks feel natural on Xbox 360 controller

          • Unalighned John (JJ)

            November 5, 2013 at 12:26

And the knobbies are concave, though I see they’ve done that on the new dualshock too.

          • ToshZA

            November 5, 2013 at 12:27

That’s the least of why it’s better. Its heavier, fits just perfectly, doesn’t get uncomfortable, you never have to strain, and I can game the whole weekend without any “nintendo thumbs”. Dualshock takes 2 – 3 hours before my hands need a break.

          • TiMsTeR1033

            November 5, 2013 at 12:30

PS2, Xbox 360, and played plenty on friends’ PS3. There’s no difference between PS2 and PS3 in the controller – comfort-wise. As you can imagine, I only jam Xbox nowadays.

You’re meant to use a question mark when asking a question, such as “why?”. You can then of course follow it up with a singular exclamation mark, ie: “Why?!”. Also, multiple uses of exclamation marks are not grammatically correct. Even when going for emphasis.

On a more serious note: I just don’t enjoy it. It gets so old so fast, it’s the same thing over and over and over. It reminds me (although only slightly) of CoD. Just the same thing. Yes, there’s tons to do. Yes, you get to be a bad ass criminal (or one of 3). But its boring.

            November 5, 2013 at 12:52

That’s why I added the brackets. Its only the feeling that “I’ve done this all before” that is similar. But I load it up, and 15 minutes in I get that feeling. “I’ve done this before.” Why would I spend R700 for that feeling, when I can just reinstall another game for the same thing? I have plenty to choose from.

            November 5, 2013 at 13:02

It is not the same at all.. I played them all. Gta 5 is completely different to all the others. the world feels alive, Limited to your own creativity. Which mind you in the career you in, should not be the problem.

          • ToshZA

            November 5, 2013 at 13:13

So an open world sandbox game where you commit criminal acts and evade police, run over old grannies for their pension money, and solicit hookers is completely different to the other games where you commit criminal acts and evade police, run over old grannies for their pension money, and solicit hookers?

          • TiMsTeR1033

            November 5, 2013 at 13:18

It is so much more than that! The story is great, characters feel real. The missions are fun, refreshing and interesting. The things to see, do and play around with just adds life on a whole different level. Compare Gta V to older gta games and it is a head and shoulders above them completely.

          • ToshZA

            November 5, 2013 at 13:25

And the last GTA I enjoyed was GTA2. I’ve played the others. They all had that same feeling of meh. Been there, done that. No matter how big they got, how much more there was to do, or how real it feels or gets. Its still the same game – just with a shiny new coat. The numbers don’t lie, its a worldwide phenomenon, I just haven’t boarded that train.

Yes. In this one you can’t steal their pension money:P But it is very different in it’s single player storyline (you can say all games do the same thing to a certain extent, shoot this person, drive here, do this mission) than any of the other GTAs).

believe me your better off not playing it, i found a bug in the single player that makes most the shops dissapear from the map leaving you nable to complete the game or even enjoy it. i posted the video and so far over 600+ people have had the same issue. when i wrote rockstar multiple support inquiries about it each of there responses had absolutely nothing to do with what i just mentioned. they would say something like the issue is resolved we are giving you 500k online money to fix your character from dissapearing online. im like wtf

its some stupid random glitch/bug/error in single player that makes all the icons dissapear and you cant use them, like the car mod shop will just dissapear from the map, itll be there but you cant go in it nor use it. also sometimes it makes even the clothing shops and stores unusable. it makes the game almost implayable and it still has not been fixed yet because rockstar only cares about online. all these stupid game companys say that adding online makes games sell a certain percentage more, thats why they almost never fix single player because online is there first priority

Since I prematurely stopped growing in 1998, the PS3 controller is fine for me! In fact, I prefer that it’s not weighty. The x360 controller is just too unwieldy for me.

Since I prematurely stopped growing in 1998, the PS3 controller is fine for me! In fact, I prefer that it’s not weighty. The x360 controller is just too unwieldy for me.

PS2, Xbox 360, and played plenty on friends’ PS3. There’s no difference between PS2 and PS3 in the controller – comfort-wise. As you can imagine, I only jam Xbox nowadays.

Yeah, never really thought this rumour had any legs, especially since the PS4 overheated in a sealed plastic/glass box.

But any way guys, where’s the article on the xbone’s OS trouble? It’s strange that something that explosive and meaty hasn’t been covered yet.

You haven’t? Neogaf’s been on fire about OS issues for the last two weeks ago. It followed resolution-gate. But, it seems the Gaf is on a completely different plane. They broke resolution-gate a week before it trickled down to the masses, and I suspect the OS issue will probably do the same.

It would be a strange for Microsoft to admit that “Yes, our OS is broken, but we’re going to release this month any ways” – especially this close to a contested launch. I mean they didn’t even want to acknowledge the RROD issue until months afterwards, until it became impossible to deny it any longer.

I’ll be very surprised if Mortimer is wrong on this one. He broke the resolution issue and the DRM issue – along with others (which the buttocks confirmed on both cases), so he has good sources.

            Apparently!

It all boils down to MS being forced to do a 180 on the DRM, the OS is unfinished, which means it’s very unstable.

Why would they report on something like that? A stupid rumour in the console war.
Yes, and article on the rumour could do, but you do well enough on here to make us aware of that.

lol prodigys ghost. just so people know, ive had my ps3 since 2006 i leave it on sometimes 28 hours straight. its pretty much on nonstop i use it for everything and i game all damn day. but i also take care of mine. once a year i completely take it apart and do a dust cleaning. i also redo the thermal compound with arctic silver. my power source went out on it in 2008 but thats because i was using the switch in the back like a dummy. the reason ps3s got the ylod is because sony wasnt allowed to use lead in there soddering the chip to the motherboard. this cause the soddering to break when to hot on some of the old models. i doubt ps4 will have a problem. theyve had 6 years to fix this problem and we dont hear many of the slims breaking down nearly as much as the first gen

thats the main thing is just getting the dust out so thats good. but if you go all the way down to the fan you automatically seperate the thermal paste so its good to take the factory paste off and put on some good ol evenly applied arctic silver. if you dont go that far down to taking it apart then its not needed often. but i have pulled big globs of dust out of it the first time i did it

    All this means absolutely nothing.

Overheating problems aren’t the whole unit getting hot (although that would be bad) it is a single component or part of a component developing heating problems overtime.

For instance the one of main PS3 problems was the Nvidia GPU getting hot not beyond operational temps but enough to cause the BGA connections to expand and contract enough for them to crak causing the YLOD issues.

we will only know if either the PS4 and XboxOne have a issue by this time next year.
