Because the iPad practically is one already, HI-YOOOO!
Still, the house that Steve Jobs built is no stranger to such rumours, with the internet frothing at the mere mention of such an idea. After all, they’ve got the cash, the technology and the engineering know how to create such a device, so what’s stopping them?
Well, according to shiny new Apple Boss Tim Cook, that would be evolution. “Gaming has kind of evolved a bit”, Cook said at the D10 conference talk, which Kotaku picked up on.
More people play on portable devices. Where we might go in the future, we’ll see. Customers love games. I’m not interested in being in the console business in what is thought of as traditional gaming. But Apple is a big player today and things in the future will only make that bigger.
And it’s not as if Apple isn’t a major player already in the gaming market. Their Apple branded products all feature some form of access to the iTunes market, which is just crawling with games right now, especially the massively addictive Kingdom Rush, which I just can’t stop playing.
So it’s less Apple actually needing to make a gaming console, and more or less the fact that they just don’t have to, considering how they have enough cash right now to actually buy a few countries.
