If there is something that I truly hate right now it’s the current fashion of freemium games where you get the game for free but are then forced to pay out a fortune in micro transactions to actually play the game the way it should have been played.

Now we all know that we had to fork out full price for GTA V but it looks like Rockstar are still planning on milking us dry when the online side of the game is turned on.

If you go into the in game store at the moment you will notice it is closed but an enterprising reddit user decided to do a trace on the network and noticed that this file is being requested. It’s an XML file which is stock standard for web communication but the interesting parts are in four of the nodes it appears that you can buy yourself extra in game money.

The four specific items are as follows, all have the same description

Cash is king in this town. Solve your money problems and help get what you want across Los Santos and Blaine County with the purchase of cash packs for Grand Theft Auto Online. All purchased cash is automatically deposited into your character’s bank account. Spend wisely, cash therapy is fleeting.

Red Shark Card – $100 000

redshark

Tiger Shark Card – $200,000

Tigershark

Bull Shark Card – $500,000

BullShark

And the mother of all credit cards

Great White Shark Card – $1,250,000

GreatWhiteShark

So could Rockstar really be preparing to do this even while they mock the entire idea of micro-transactions inside the game?

If you go onto the Righteous Slaughter 7 website in game, which is an obvious dig at the Call of Duty and Battlefield games of the day, it states the following

“Purchase upgrades so that you can destroy those with more skill and less money than you – just like in real life.”

Is Rockstar cocky enough to mock everyone and then follow through with the exact same thing? Personally I can’t see this being accurate as I’ve only played through half the game and I have a few million in the bank so why would I want to buy as little as $200k? What do you think, are they going to implement micro transactions and block heists in multiplayer?

You can make a lot of money with the assassination missions from Lester. Although if you leave them till after the final heist you can turn that into well over $200m per character.

I was actually thinking the same thing last night. The golf course costs 150 million dollars. I have barely 60 million between the three characters. Michael won’t hit that amount of money.. ANY TIME SOON (and that’s even while playing the stockmarket or just waiting for my weekly property cheques to clear)

I think Rockstar might just pull a Bethesda on us….

Banana Jim tips his top hat to the side, and strokes moustache. Don’t fret young capitalist. The moto is simple. Buy low sell high!

Or if you’re really keen, play companies against each other. Like for instance Taco Bomb and the Chicken joint. Buy shares in one, and then destroy the competition’s trucks or kill their employees.

      That’s CAPITALISM! 😀

I’m currently playing with the insurance stocks, I’m blowing up stuff to see if that affects the stock prices of the insurance companies. It seemed to go up, after I went on a rampage at the airport. Also blowing up petrol stations and investing in the competition helps too. (Ron oil and the other one…)

I don’t think you can swap mid mission though, although I only caught on to what was happening during the second Lester mission. The first one I didn’t have cash to invest because I had wasted my money on prostitutes and pimping my ride… :/ sigh!

The on-line is going to have many ups and downs but who cares when we have the best game ever created.

“Are Rockstar preparing to nickel and dime us?”

Only if you buy into it, at which point, you’re nickel and diming yourself. Take some responsibility for your actions, stop trying to blame everyone else.

You decide what you play, you decide what you pay for. Rockstar isn’t forcing anything, on anyone. If you don’t like it, or think what Rockstar is creating is detrimental to gaming, try….not playing it?
