So we’re all still celebrating Microsoft’s decision to drop the always online requirement and the used games DRM but there is still one weird requirement from Microsoft and that is that we have to be online to register the console… but why?
Obviously it would be nice for Microsoft to know exactly how many consoles are being sold and used and where in the world the consoles are currently doing well. But the small online requirement is still going to annoy a segment of the market so why on earth would they still force that requirement?
Well what if Microsoft has already manufactured the first wave of Xbox Ones and have them ready to ship in a surprise move at Gamescom? Then they would need you to connect to the Internet to download a patch that disables the always on requirement.
This would explain the initial connection requirement and would give Microsoft a chance of regaining their competitive edge by beating Sony to the market again.
So what do you think? Are Microsoft about to shock the industry by releasing the Xbox One before November?
Oh and there are rumours that we are going to see both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 at rAge this year.

I was wondering about that, do you think the next gen consoles will be more susceptible to hacking given they are sitting on PC architecture?
Argentil
June 21, 2013 at 09:49
Quite possibly. I believe Sony will continue their firmware update fight into the next generation. As for MS, I thought they would be completely protected with the 24-hour check system, but now that that’s removed, I am interested to see which anti-piracy measures they will employ.

Considering they have a set number of units allocated to each retailer, yes. Gamestop employees were saying that they had a unit count of 16 Xbox Ones and 60 PS4’s before capping preorders.
HvR
June 21, 2013 at 09:12
If they are shipping in November both MS and Sony already started the manufacturing process and I will be very surprised if they haven’t done a few couple of 1000 unit manufacturing runs to test the manufacturing line see if there is any problems and start QA processes.
These units are normally for internal use only.

That is the point. The game isn’t finished, they still have work to do on it. Do you read comments or automatically jump to Sony Defense Force mode at every comment?
Argentil
June 21, 2013 at 09:30
That wasn’t a Sony Defense Force mode-inspired comment. It was completely neutral in tone. It is what it is. Personally, I’m quite sick of all of the anti-Xbox talk. Regardless, I’m not going to censor myself from making a complete point. I don’t think there is anything wrong with the fact that the games were unoptimised. GoW was running on souped up Macs before the 360 launch, after all.
Edit: I actually meant to reply to Happy Hamster, so I can see why you bit my head off.

At a show like E3, you don’t want any problems or frame rate issues to come up. The game probably still requires a fare bit of optimization before it is ready to be played on a console.

I think you’re missing the connotations. What Gavin’s impyling is that MS have already boxed and delivered some boxes, making them unavailable for software updates. It’s quite early to be sending out units. It’s not a negative thing at all actually. The implication is a positive one.

Their coverage has been pretty neutral, if not favouring of MS actually. Any little ray of hope warrants an article, whereas a lot of negative ones are ignored. It really can’t be helped that most of the Xbox One news has been negative. Don’t read into it too much. I have always felt this site sways slightly (very slightly) toward Xbox-favouritism.

It seems to me that Microsoft is targeting the 48 million Xbox Live users. Maybe trying to get good launch sales, idk.
But if you look at the 52 million offlive / no Xbox Live Xbox 360 users, they got all their system updates from new game discs. So for 52 million people there is still a big problem, internet connection.
Why does Microsoft think that every single person in the world have fast stable internet. How hard is it for Microsoft to update to consoles before launch, how hard is it for Microsoft to add a system update disc with every console, because you know not everyone who plays games have internet.
I bought the XBox 1 over the Ps2 because i felt it had better hardware for the games. I bought the Xbox 360 over the Ps3 because i felt the ram setup was better for open world games.
I will not buy the Xbox One because i feel that DRM and internet requirements, is a big fuck you to gamers, the same gamers you need to buy your shitty corporation box, where advertising is more important than all gamers getting to play the games on your gaming console.
We are not buying a voice tv remote, we not paying for adverts, we are not paying to use the internet.
We are paying for better hardware to play the games. That’s it.

This here is a fine example of the media brainwashing the uninformed public.
*sniggles at this guy when he has download a game breaking patch from Sony….hehehehe
Argentil
June 21, 2013 at 09:46
Now-now, don’t be mean. Let him have an opinion. This is why I never agreed with the online requirement in the first place, even though I have good internet, and always keep my consoles connected. There are millions of people who will have to just give it up, and it’s a valid point worth making. If you were one of the millions, you would feel similarly.
I don’t think the day one patch is so bad though. It’s a once off, compared to a daily requirement. If someone wants the console enough, they will take it to a buddy’s place to get the update, or go to an internet cafe if they have to.
Ryanza
June 21, 2013 at 10:24
where to start. I am the type of person to turn off the internet to play games. I am the type of person who will turn on the internet to play multiplayer games. When a game / console breaking patch is released, it would not affect me because my console is not connected to the internet 24 hours a day. Does this not help my no internet argument. Make the code work on release day and not release and patch later.
I guess your Sony comment meant that i will be buying the PS4 at launch. Well I am the type of person to wait for the brainwashing media to open up both consoles and see what misinformed hardware is under the hood. I am the type of person to wait for the brainwashing media to do tests on both consoles to see which console plays the games better. Better coded for, if that’s what you looking for. And then I will use my uninformed media brain washing to buy the best console for GTA.
But hey i guess all that matters is that DRM and internet requirements doesn’t affect you. So fuck us media brainwashed uninformed public. Did i mention that DRM works to play your games instantly and the second hand market and piracy is killing the gaming industry and not because developers are spending lots of money to making shit games. But I am so uninformed. Xbox One is for gamers, by gamers.

It is likely. I like those sorts of business tactics.
I always think, in my own work, what my advantage is, what can I / we offer that others cannot. But none of that is relevant if time to market is too long. And to surprise with a new product, or an early product is a fantastic advantage.
When dealing with new products, companies tend to keep that information as strategic and secret.
