Are you experiencing severe lag in Call of Duty:Advanced Warfare?

Advanced Warfare is now out, and many of you have been experiencing the pewpewpew thrills it has to offer. The game’s supposed to run using dedicated servers, making it a fantastic multiplayer experience for all – but some users are reporting that all they’re experiencing is crippling lag, and shoddy lag compensation.

Forums and social media feeds are abuzz with angry gamers who’re getting a less-than-awesome multiplayer experience – particularly on the PS4. The game still seems to run on a peer-to-peer connection, meaning it uses algorithms for lag compensation – messing with the host’s game, to make up for the lag that all the other players might experience.

Here’s what Neo GAF user Frillen says of the game’s netcode.

“The netcode for me is absolutely horrible. I’m not going to continue playing this if it doesn’t improve, because right now I lose pretty much 95% of the one on one battles… This is the worst netcode I’ve ever experienced in a CoD. I basically have to camp now in order to have a decent chance at going 1.00 in a game. I still somehow have an overall K/D of 1.21 though, mostly because I camp.”

Echoing the sentiments of other users in the thread, Cajun says:

“As pretty much everyone else is saying, the lag comp in this game is outright ridiculous. Not the worst I’ve ever played with in a game, but it’s definitely up there. Thinking you’re going to win a gunfight because you have the first 3 shots, only to be melted instantly instead is one of the most frustrating things that can happen in a fast paced game like this.”

Here’s another complaint, from Serick

“Is anyone else experiencing ridiculous lag issues on PS4? 8/10 games the entire game is sitting at one red bar (except the host and maybe 1-2 other players) and the game stutters.”

Here’s the lag compensation in action.

Call of Duty: Ghosts launched without servers, but rolled them out post-launch. Hopefully Activision and Sledgehammer will be doing the same with Advanced Warfare.  It must be a joy for US players to have random South Africans jumping in to their games, making everything lag. I’ve not played it, so I can’t comment. Have you been experiencing terrible lag, or lag compensation making the game less fun than it should be? If so, let us know what platforms and connection you’re playing on.

thats why. my internet was at 55mbps last night. so if you and i got in a 1v1 gunfight, lag comp benefits you and even if i shot first, you’d have a chance to rally and melt my face off. happens to me more often than not. i dont blame our internet, i blame the cheapskates at activision

WTH has or can even deal with a 1 MBPS connection?? I should never lag I have 55 as well, but people like Jeff and Petros screw everything up.. If you have a slow connection it should be your own death, not mine! But COD will never fix this. In fact, I agree that they do it on purpose! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y7CTGY16m3I

No it’s not that. I’m somewhere in the middle in terms of connection – 8-10 mb/s and I have TERRIBLE lag. Most of the time because it connects to servers that are in countries FAR from where I live, which is utter BULLSHIT. How difficult is it to prioritize matchmaking based on region??? Seriously pathetic problem that I haven’t experienced since MW2.

hahaha Glad to see all the COD kids stand together. My 1mb wifi with a 1:1 contention rate is probably better than most people with a 4mb ADSL account with a contention of 50:1.

It’s not COD kids it’s people who understand the effect of bandwidth on a video game. MW2 had a recommended internet connection at 2mb to 4mb UPload if I’m not mistaken? The result is – steadier connection across the whole map. sure, at 1mb D/l rate and hosting, or even not being the host YOU are playing fine.. but you’re making it harder on everybody when you are host because your upload speed is below what they’ve been stating as optimal gameplay since mw2 was released. Of course…this wouldn’t be an issue with dedicated servers.

Why don’t you people get it. its nothing to do with connection speed. in fact there’s probably no difference for gaming between a 1MB connection and a 1000MB connection. its ALL down to latency/PING. the time in which it takes for you to send a packet of data and then receive the reply to and from the server/host. this can be effected by a lot of things. i do agree that they need dedicated servers for the game though P2P hosts is total BS.

I’ve got Type 2 NAT, and can’t seem to change it on the POS Telkom Duoplus router.
Will your NAT tipe affect your connection so much that it becomes unplayable?

          • Jonah Cash

            November 5, 2014 at 13:24

I am definitely not an expert, but from I got mine to type 1 last night I had very little to no lag on my 4mb line while playing Fifa… But then again my telkom line is terribly unstable most of the time!!
But in my 4 year research it has always been the best to have an open NAT / NAT 1…
I had to disable DHCP in my router, apparently it tries and make two different IP addresses for the PS4 even if you give it a static IP. After I did this I got NAT Type 1 for the first time ever. When you do a internet test on your PS4 do you get a message at the bottom that scrolls that says: IP packet fragmentation….. bla bla bla,
I think that is the biggest problem when you have that because it says that online won’t work 100%.

          • Jonah Cash

            November 5, 2014 at 13:33

NAT type 1 is open, it is having your PS4 directly attached to the router. But I had that and it was still NAT Type 2, but after I took off the DHCP when I went to set up my internet on the PS4 I picked auto and it asked for my ISP username and password, so I guess it is now pretty much just using the router as gateway and I don’t have any firewall on my PS4 but I am now for the first time getting the line speed on my PS4 that I get on my laptop for instance. It was always about 1mb slower, but now it is actually a bit quicker.

As the name suggests, DHCP is used to control the network configuration of a host through a remote server. So you will have to put in your network configuration on some of your electronics yourself again. My iPhone 5 reconnected with no hassle, but my wife’s one didn’t want to so I gave it a static IP.

            Hope this helps. Good luck

I disabled DHCP but still getting a NAT type 2, though the connections speeds went up on my ps4 which is always good

            November 6, 2014 at 15:07

Did you tell the PS4 to manage your connection automatically and then it asks for your ISP username and password?
Glad it at least opened up some speed, played Fifa again last night and the difference is just crazy….

            November 6, 2014 at 22:09

NAT 1 is directly connected to the MODEM… NAT 2 is directly connected to the ROUTER…
NAT 3 is all F*&# up and needs to be addressed…

NAT 2 doesn’t mean your issues will be corrected. Just enable UPnP and make sure the devices are grabbing an IP from the router’s DHCP server.

The DHCP server on your router only assigns IP addresses… it doesn’t “control the network configuration of a host through a remote server”. Please don’t spread misinformation.

If disabling the DHCP fixed your problem it is either that you are forcing the same IP on 2 devices or you mis-configured something else.

Hahahaha!! Read my first comment on this, I said not an expert just told people what worked for me!! But I am very sorry for spreading misinformation, please don’t be angry…. did you just really type that to me? Is your life that empty that you have to find people on the internet who is telling other people what worked for them and tell them not to spread misinformation??? Wow…. Well done dude well done
And if you read my other comment you will see that I had my PS4 connected directly to my router but still got NAT type 2, I found an article on the web where a guy did some research and found that the PS4 is trying to get an IP address even when you give it a static IP address. So it doesn’t even show up on DHCP client list. After I disabled the DHCP it all of a sudden went to NAT Type 1….. so you might know more than me on this shit, but there are plenty things I know more than you!! So if you are trying to be an asshole, well done you have succeeded with a 10/10!! Cheers

This is what I was talking about the other day. But I was told that I don’t know shit, that there is no lag, that there is no problems, that I should buy the game before I can speak and that I’m a troll.

Lag compensation is good for people like us in South Africa when playing with lag, lets say international matches. Without lag compensation you will have to shoot like 2 seconds in front. So like if a person is running you don’t shoot at them but shoot in front of them.

With lag compensation you can shoot at the person on your screen and wait 2 seconds.

But what do I know. The Witcher 3. No DRM. Clearly I don’t know shit. Clearly I am a troll.

Don’t mind me. This is not really a Ryanza comment.

I was thinking the drone swarm came right out of classic vertical and side scrolling arcade games. Also the Matrix is a blatant ripoff of Ghost in the machine.

The lag is horrible….and if you take a close look at the players at the top of the recap, they usually have the worst ping…its almost impossible to play when rubberbanding and players appearing and disappearing. They need to get rid of the lag compensation so the majority who have a decent high speed internet connection can actually play.

So I’m running on a 55mbit DL/60mbit UL connection and I am getting slaughtered by lag compensation on the PC. I even port forwarded, checked my NAT type, and plugged in to my router for a wired connection. The first game I joined, I lost connection. 1/4 of my shots connect. Players teleport around. I die instantly upon meeting an enemy. The game’s p2p bullshit is unapologetically unfair and makes it literally impossible for me to play or remain above a 1.00KDR without truly struggling through a camping round.

This is honestly pathetic. How could they be so revolutionary with the gameplay, make so much money, and look over one of the most basic principles of multiplayer gaming? Everyone has a different connection speed. Host a dedicated server. If anything, stop fucking compensating for lag because it makes SERIOUS gamers with connection speeds that THEY PAY MORE FOR have a SHITTY TIME PLAYING THIS GAME. FIX THE GOD DAMN MULTIPLAYER.

Nothing new about a CoD game. I sold my others after it got really bad with Black Ops and BOPS2. I went from an average K/D of 13 to about 2.3, and only then was able to maintain because I camped. Lag comp messes up the hitbox too, causing it to be several scaled feet off sometimes. I have gotten many kills by shooting outside the bounds intentionally. Anyway, Advanced Warfare is unplayable for some, including me. I expected to throw it away at some point, but thought I would at least get a week or two out of it. Oh well, back to Destiny 😉

Exactly! Everyone else is going to dedicated servers. The master chief collection will have them, destiny and titanfall already do. With Microsoft giving access to their azure servers to developers for free, there’s really no excuse for activision to not take advantage. Smh. I should have known better.

Even in single player mode, there is audio/spoken language lag (mouths are moving and words follow 5 seconds later). Even worse is that if you “get to a destination” before someone on your team that’s suppose to “instruct” you, it confused the game, even to the point that I’ve had to restart entire levels cuz my men got “stuck” and would jump down to find me. I suspect and pray that another update comes out soon and all these issues are fixed. Until then…..

I have been wondering what has been going on since I jumped into AW. In my case, I see my guy shooting 7 or 8 rounds into someone…while they get 1,2,or 3 and I’m dead, not to mention they didn’t even see me in the first place. When I watch the caughtcam….it shows the opposite, they’ve put 4 or 5 rounds into me, and I got none or maybe just one. My k/d is shot after just 10 hours played. Very frustrating.

It doesn’t make sense that a company is so cheap that it doesn’t care how the online portion of a game plays and that’s really the only portion of the game thats left. I mean I can’t play the campaign together with my friends anymore….also garbage! I’m done pre-buying games all together and will never buy another digital game. People can believe what they want to believe – it is the internet after all. As a console gamer who has played COD online since MW2 – and as a person who makes their living working in the networking and IT industry, the entire lag compensation argument that seems to exist among so many COD players is laughable.

ALL online multiplayer games such as COD HAVE TO HAVE LAG COMPENSATION. It is a fact of life. But it’s not some hidden agenda item that big wigs at “evil” corporations laugh about over cocktails and caviar.

There are highly technical explanations, but I will relay the simplest explanation I ever heard and it is ENTIRELY accurate.

    Let’s use a 1 v 1 gun battle in our example.
Player 1 is in CA. Player 2 is in FL.
Player 1 aims at player 2 and fires his weapon.
On Player 1’s screen this happens in real time – if it didn’t no one would play the game.
IN REALITY This is what happens
Player 1 fires at player 2. The network must transfer the data of that shot to the host (regardless of who or what the host is). Even though it likely only takes MILLISECONDS to transfer that data, unless player 2 is sitting still that entire time – by the time the data reaches the host, to let the game know that Player 1 shot Player 2, Player 2 has already MOVED.
Behind the scenes, the code inside the game takes into account the amount of time it took that data to get to the host, goes back to where Player 2 was at that time and applies the data (the shots fired).

    That’s REALITY.

Now for those that think their 50mb down connection is being penalized by the kid playing on a 1mb down wireless connection – you are right AND wrong.
You could never sell enough games to make any money if you didn’t build in some lag compensation. If the player with the fastest internet connection (in reality ping speed to the host) always won each gun fight because their ping was simply better, you’d have millions of players who wouldn’t play.

What happens when there is a lot of network congestion for the low ping time players?

Too many gamers see the kill cam (I have been guilty of it) and think that because it shows something different from what they actually saw on their screen, that it proves their lag comp theory. Nope – that’s just good old fashioned lag. Plenty of videos on Youtube that show it at work even in private / local matches.

Why do you think so many serious gamers invest in modified controllers, using computer monitors to play on (that may be a few milliseconds quicker in relaying what they see vs. what is happening) and other devices?

It may be small – but it works towards giving them more of an advantage. Now as most of these hardcore gamers, at least for FPS online games, have very good reflexes – much better than the average person, this results in an even bigger disparity in reacton time and the resulting outcome in the game.

The old joke among the people I play with online-

If you lose, it’s either the other team “has connection”, the other team is causing you to lag, they are camping or they are hacking.

Since likely no one will read this – continue with the whining and crying. Nothing to see here.

I’m having an EXTREMELY hard time with this game…. From the lag AND lag comp, I can barely play this game…. I tried to camp but guess what my aim bounces away from my target without ever being shot then, I shoot first and DIE first… this is UNACCEPTABLE… This game needs to be refounded and boycotted… How many years will people buy this game and hope that the lag will be fixed or changed???… I was lucky.. I bought this game from target and got a free game with their buy two get one free deal… So basically it was free for me, but I wouldn’t have bought it/got it free if I had to pay full price for it. I know what to expect but nothing could have prepared me for this.. CoD Ghost gameplay is boring and stale but the lag wasn’t this bad…

Not only you get lag comp’ed but the lag is horrendous… 80-90% of my gun battles are lost as I am always the one that shoots 1st, but on the killcam I dont even shoot or hit my target??? lag comp makes you run slower, less health, instantly killed aka one shot’ed, moves your aim away from targets, pulls your “SCREEN” away from enemies, and nerfs your guns… Give me a break, I’m not stupid I know what devs do… This game is the worse with lag comp, never played anything like this level of lag comp…

CoD sales aren’t as great as once were BUT the game still sales in the millions EVERY YEAR yet Activision won’t invest in in dedicated servers??? Give me break… Sorry to all the gamers out there that being suckered… I used to love CoD but no more, enough is enough…

Some people tell me that it’s not lag. I’m just no good at cod. Last cod game I purchased was black ops 2. I still play mw3 on the custom servers because it’s so much better.

Anyway back to this game. I have virgin media 50mb connection. Using 3rd party software to help with lag. I get average 20 – 40 ms lag. I can ping an American server from england and it takes 150ms or round about. The times I shoot a round of 30+ bullets having half of them hit while looking down the sight. Only for the person to turn round and kill me with 1 bullet. And I watch kill cam and it shows 1 bullet hits. And this happens time and time again even on below 40ms ping. Then if I disconnect the Internet and connect to Internet through tethering through my phone and using that I get stupid ping times of 100ms plus pinging just 200 miles away. But I get kill after kill after kill.

If I go back to my normal Internet. I get killed time and time again. Unless I’m on combat readiness where I get 30+ kill streaks all the time. And I don’t know why that is. Unless they are all new to the game who go on that.

Yeah I’ve been playing the game for a week, and the above video is all that is happening. I can scrape by on a few kills per mission, i have a decent Wifi connection. I’ve never had this problem with GTA 5, Bad Company 2 or any of my other games. I like AW but this is irritating as fuck.

I’m stationed in Guam and I forever will have 1 bar out here even though I pay over 100 dollars a month for 25mps internet. That’s my situation 🙁

100Mbps down 10Mbps upload, 50 ms ping across the US (10 local) a display with a fast refresh rate and top rated router and modem NAT type always open. I still have crippling lag. But it’s not my character lagging…..

I couldn’t figure it out… I’m the only one in the lobby with 1 red bar, everyone else full or almost full bars. I check speed on laptop and I’m connecting at 83mpbs upload around 12 and ping low 90’s. So I’m too fast??? That should play to my advantage… Tonight I will try streaming a movie in my phone, computer and tablet while I play..

So, how many of you have pre-ordered Black Ops 3?

Anyway this game should have been called: Advanced BALfare.

I am on an XBox One and the lag is outrageous. I struggle to get more than 6 kills. I usually quit because I can see that I am not about to kill anyone. I mow people down and they just turn around and kill me. If they aren’t standing still then I won’t kill them.

I’m on the destiny edition ps4 and I’m experiencing horrible lag. If this doesn’t get fixed soon then the only thing I’m playing is battlefield this is ridiculous and I am a dedicated clan war clan leader we can’t play with lag if we are in a con war especially diamond division.

This is only a COD issue. BF4 had the same issue the first few months, but they fixed it. All other major and non-major fps games don’t have the lag issues COD has. Some say it’s internet connection, some say ping, it’s a number of issues that only COD developers can’t seem to fix. Which means it’s done on purpose
