ARK: Survival Evolved is the Dino Riders game that you’ve been waiting for

ARK (1)

Survival games have been all the rage for a couple of years now. And I’ve got a feeling that dinosaurs will also be joining that craze soon enough, when Jurassic World opens up in a month. But a survival game with dinosaurs? Yes. YES. I like this idea very much. And it’s an idea which developer Studio Wildcard is working on, with ARK: Survival Evolved , an open-world survival game. With dinosaurs.

Here’s a taste of the in-engine gameplay being promised, which runs on the Unreal Engine 4:

Starring you as one of numerous survivors who have found themselves stuck in Cretaceous Camp, players need to get their naked ass on the move and hunt their way back up the food chain. A food chain populated with Velociraptors, Apatosauruses and various other sauropods that I failed to learn about from my fortnightly dinosaur magazine that came with a glowing T-Rex skeleton.

ARK (3)

ARK will also feature “dynamic, persistent ecosystems across land, sea, air, and even underground” according to the press release, which will require players “hunt, harvest, craft, research technology, and build shelters to protect against scorching days, freezing nights, volatile weather systems, dangerous wildlife, and potential enemies”. The big hook here being that players can form their own tribe with others and go to war with opposing teams., while also discovering 60 different dinosaurs which can be tamed as well.

ARK (2)

“ARK taps into the scale, size, and wildly unpredictable nature of the dinosaur eras like no other game before it, then pairs it with the wonders of exploration and technological discovery,” said Studio Wildcard co-creative director Jesse Rapczak in the presser. It sounds like a pretty ambitious game. Which could be GOTY material if we can add lasers to the dinosaurs.

Dino Riders

C’mon, I’m not the only person thinking about it. ARK will hit PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Steam Early Access players get their hands on ARK from June 2.

And I’m desperate for a dinosaur game. Stomping Lands was canned, but Vlad joined Beasts of Prey now and it’s starting to look really good. Haven’t spent enough hours on it yet, but so far it’s pretty cool. The Hunter Primal isn’t quite survival, so that hasn’t interested me much.
To ride dinos is something else entirely though.

            Don’t remind me.
Worst of all is that Michael Crichton and members of the crew discouraged Steven Spielberg from altering the story of The Lost World so much, yet he still did it.

One cannot *believe* in dinosaurs. Their existence is not predicated on ideological rainbows and butterflies. Console yourself with the knowledge that the real things were probably awesome now matter how badly Spielberg fucks up. 😛

As a kid I was blessed enough to have many Dino-riders toys…but the prize of my collection was ALL of the He-Man action figures, along with a home made (by my mom and Grandmother), shoulder high (for a kid) papier mache landscape complete with Caste Greyskull…I spent every waking moment playing there…

Sadly when I turned 13 my mom decided I was too old for such things and donated ALL my toys and several metric tons of lego to Nazareth house for the underpriveliged kids to have something to play with…then proceeded to make me feel terrbily guilty when I complained because I “was selfish and didn’t want the poor kids to have any toys”…or something to that effect…

This is so long overdue. I’ve been wishing for a dino game for years.
But I’ve got Beasts of Prey now, and it’s pretty awesome. Plus it’s on sale now.

Vlad from Stomping Lands (the guy who actually wanted to finish it) moved to Beasts of Prey and he’s doing some really good work there.
I’m loving it. Not as pretty as Stomping Lands was, but it’s getting there.
