Arkham City “five times bigger than Arkham Island”

Rocksteady’s Arkham Asylum is, as certified by record recorders and black liquid brewers Guinness, the best super hero game of all time (OF ALL TIME!). It’s first super hero game where I actually felt like the titular rubber-suited hero; I was Gotham’s cowled defender. (I’m BATMAN!).

Later this year, Rocksteady plans on wowing us with their follow up; which sounds like it’ll be going a little more “open world.” Not all that fond of sandbox games? Me neither, but this one promises something different.

"The footprint of Arkham City is about five times bigger than Arkham Island," said game director Sefton Hill has an interview. Despite that, Hill promises, the game will retain the feel of the original.

"In Batman: Arkham Asylum, we really focused our effort on creating an intense, pressure-cooker atmosphere by locking Batman in the madhouse and allowing The Joker to turn up the heat. In Arkham City, we want to take that attitude to the next level, so we created an experience in which gamers will have a huge amount of navigational freedom, but they will also feel the extreme pressure of the challenges that they face," he told GameSpot

Unlike most open world games, you won’t be aimlessly exploring the city if that’s not your thing. "Players will be able to go anywhere at any time, but we have made sure that players will always have a very clear idea of where they are needed most if they want to just stick to the core narrative path of the game," he said

"Explore the streets of Arkham City, and you will find many side missions, secrets, and street brawls, so players won’t find it difficult to get into some trouble if that’s what they are looking for."

Apparently there’s still no functional Batmobile though, so I hope they’ve given the Dark Knight a comfortable pair of shoes.

Arkham City is scheduled for release in the third quarter of this year, on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.
