I have been sitting here for the last hour trying to come up with a nice way of putting this that will deflect any Xbox 360 fanboy accusations that are targeted this way whenever we report on a Xbox 360 vs PS3 comparison.
But alas I have ended up empty handed…
Digital Foundry have used the latest technical magic to compare Assassin’s Creed 2 on the Xbox 360 to the same game on the PS3 and the PS3 has once again come up short.
I have to be honest here and say that I am disappointed in the PS3, it promised the world before it was released and now 3 years later it is still playing catch up on the cross platform games and anyone trying to point the finger at lazy developers is simply deluding themselves.
Thankfully the developers have considerably closed the gap in quality since the first title in the series and now playing the PS3 version is no longer considered a chore and is highly recommended if you don’t have a Xbox 360.
But in the words of Digital Foundry themselves,
“It’s an essential game on both platforms, but if you’ve got both consoles, the 360 version is clearly the more solid performerâ€

Ok this is how i stand.
If the PS3 had crappy exclusives which only matched the multiplatform quality then i would agree with you.
but honestly the PS3 exclusives ‘kill’ the X360 exclusives in terms of graphics (gameplay is not limited to the console of course).
What it boils down to is that the x360 has a fairly similar architecture to a PC. and that architecture is easy to develop for. So in my mind it makes sense that the xbox varient will look better.
i wouldn’t really say it’s lazy developers. i think they work there asses off to get the games to look as good as they do. i just think its the fact that both the ps3 and xbox are completely different and thus creating a multiplatform engine is incredibly hard. If the game is made to specifically use the SPU’s and cell processor correctly without having to worry about porting to a different console then i think the ps3 games would look better (and i believe the exclusive games show that).
now this does sound like a horrible fanboy rant and it may well be one. but this is just what i understand the situation to be. i’m interested to hear what others think :biggrin:

I think you;’re pretty much on the money. Exclusives – ie games tailored to use the PS3’s inherent strengths without the worry of porting to another architecture blows the 360 stuff out of the water.
The problem with multiplat games isn’t really lazy devs, it’s just down to time and financial constraints.
I’m not sure which version of ACII I’ll pick up, but the interaction with the PSP AC:Bloodlines is quite a drawcard.

So the PS3 version drops maybe 3 or 4 frames more, has a little more tearing emphassis on little and has better lighting than the 360 version. To see all this they had to slow the game down and use thousands of dollars worth of technology. Shit sounds to me like the PS3 version is unplayable. Oh noes what will we do :cwy:

UC2 has the best gfx I have ever seen and the MP gfx = the SP gfx.

I have seen many journos on Twitter complaining about the frame drops on the PS3 version, which is a shame. The best looking games I have seen on a console to date are definitely PS3 exclusives, people say bad things about Killzone 2 but there is no denying that it’s visuals are some of the best in the business, even if they don’t run at 60fps, they are incredible.
Finally got my Uncharted 2, can’t wait to play it and see the visual upgrade as well.

The PS3 does have better dev tools for exclusives. Maybe thats why Microsoft are busy working on the X-Engine to catch up to the PS3’s power. Read this:

I’d love to see what Infinity Ward would be able to do on a console exclusive project. Judging from their coding ability with MW2 running at 60fps across multiple platforms imagine what they could do focusing on a single console and maybe dropping their frame-lock to 40fps. Ooooooo!!

Get Assasin Creed 2 for Ps3 and psp, you get more bang for your buck, plus its runs alot quieter and your disc wont be scratched so you can easily sell it when you get bored. Most Xbox games you try trading in won get you more than R25-50 i can get up to R350 rand for second hand ps3 games, i think the only place to trade xbox games at a fair price is bt games these days

O yeah Cats Digital will be launching their Cats Gaming Shop at the Fourways branch this Saturday it’s gonna be awesome lots of competitions it seems to be a decent gaming shop with consoles set up in each section to test and play games.

Very amusing comments mostly based on fanboy attitudes on both sides. Sure the PS3 version of AC2 has its drawbacks from the X360 version but the gameplay is still identical. Sadly I wont be buying any more X360 games until all the pirates have been rooted out, until then the PS3 has my preference.
Exclusive wise both platforms have their stronger games which balance each other out. U2 is a beauty but it aint perfect, hopefully with time Sony’s SDK will mature like the PS2 did after 5 years. Till then enjoy the plethora of titles available during a so called world recession. 🙂

I owned both systems and I never use the PS3 for gaming when titles exist for both consoles.
And to be honest, I found the gfx in Uncharted 2 to be lackluster.
I don’t mean they looked bad, but they’re not as great as everyone makes them out to be.
What’s disappointing is that Sony, AGAIN, decided they were too high and mighty to develop a console that’s easy to program for.
By the time 3rd party developers figure out how to unleash it’s full power, the Xbox 720 or PS4 will be out and the cycle will continue.
I recently had to sell the 360 because of money issue.
I hardly play anymore but I love Bluray so I chose the PS3 over the 360. But if the 360 had bluray capabilities, it would have been an easy choice.
The 360 trumps the PS3 in every category. From online, to multimedia to games. It’s no contest.
Even the controller is superior.

while there is some truth to your comments, there is a lot to be desired…
a lot of people bash sony for releasing a mighty machine, sure it didn’t work out to plan for sony. but the fact remains its a marvelous machine (so is the 360, but the ps3 is the apparent loser here).
sony’s approach by using the cell cpu was probably wrong in that they used it too early… as is evident in developers not being able to get their heads around utilising it properly.
the worst part of this generation is the die-hard fans of each console, which is only fueled by comments like:

man I’ve owned both systems and yes I’ve had the rrod but seriously..the 360 gpu is just better ..period! textures frame rates aliasing ..software tools..unified memory ..for gaming its just a better machine..and the new jasper chips run significantly cooler..the ps3 is a sexy look’n machine and built solid but to me that’s it

Um that is easy cuz I have both systems. Let’s see which exclusives kill xbox, God of War III duh. Uncharted 1 was already better than any exclusive for xbox during its time. Uncharted 2 w/ lighting and colors and expressions beat Gears (any of them). Gears is like MGS4, they have one color, dark and gray respectively. Killzone 2 destroys xbox as well. So you must be blind. Or just a fan boy. I have both systems, I am never blown by xbox graphics after I see ps3, it’s a fact. But graphic power is not a secret w/ ps3….better games well, xbox head start was better than ps3. There is no argument there.

lackluster in your definition is a bad word lol. Lackluster means bland, and UC2 is anything but that. I was going into that series not expecting the hype to live up but it sure did. Even the motions are more realistic. If UC2 is lackluster then Gears is as well since its all dark and dank.
360 has lemmings believe they are playing the next gen games because to do multiplatforms you have to program for the easier weaker one. Makes the more high tech harder. With ps3 lower in sales, they don’t have the budget, just don’t. Xbox does not beat ps3 in controllers but that is my taste having ps1 – 3. For fighting games, I would never use a 360 controller. Online 360 beats sony….that is a slamdunk.

well done, even the long quote is in MLA format lol. But I have to disagree on one thing which is one console being better than the other. Both have strengths and weaknesses that matter. So for that strength, it makes that console better period. Personally I’m tired of how xbox 360 changed the console industry into gun touting over saturated games. This generation is the generation of guns. I like uncharted 2 for it’s cinematic imagination and yes they use guns but Drake has a choice and it is not the true focus of the game. At least Uncharted 2 is not mindless point and shoot.

Bear in mind that Unchartered 3 will be better than Gears of War 3. They seem to raise the bar in the series with each sequel.
Gran Turismo 5 is also coming out, and from the previews so far I’d have to say that it craps all over Forza 3. With 5 or so years in the making and over 1000 cars and near perfect interiors for the luxury models, GT5 should be WAY better… guess we will have to wait and see.
Plus it is known far and wide that PS3 is a superior console (look at the technical online specs and reviews.) I do suspect that as games get more powerful, the distinction between XBOX 360 releases and PS3s will continue to grow dramatically (due to the PS3 having a greater capacity per disk because of its Bluray compatibilities.) FFXIII proved this flaw in the 360. Many say that Bluray is just for movies, well, think again… it is the next digital storage medium, and can be sized to accomodate larger graphical files for games too. Of course, this is Sony said right from the beginning and it is starting to become a reality. Lucky for Sony that Bluray is becoming a standard.
So all XBOX owners better get their consoles and smash them on the ground, cos you are going to have to replace them soon with the ‘XBOX 3’ 😉

It seems the only thing that the only thing they have this gen is graphics which at best are marginally better and that also depends on who you ask.How soon we forget PS2 vs XBOX. PS2 won because it had better games NOT graphics, 360 vs PS3 the 360 is winning because of 3rd party games do better on it! Something to say about potential of the consoles, someone was able to link 16 PS3’s together and used them for intensive astrophysics calculations instead of paying for time on super computers. THAT is how powerful a console it can be. Also take into account that while this is the case, more people probably own an Xbox 360 rather than a PS3 and as such a company is more likely to make a better profit if they invest in making the xbox version better.
