Assassin’s Creed 3 will be a history lesson

My knowledge of America, pretty much summed up here.

Here’s a drinking game challenge for you. Grab a pile of Assassin’s Creed trailers, watch ‘em, and have a drink every time our new protagonist Connor kills an American. Try that, and you’ll soon find yourself more sober than a straight edge tattoo convention. And while Assassin’s Creed 3 may be perceived as a pro-USA game that emphasises a Team America spirit, it’s actually less of that, and more of a history lesson, says one of its designers.

Speaking to PCGamesN, Lead Designer Steven Masters said that the game would be less “America, fuck yeah,” , and more of a history lesson with the American revolution serving as a backdrop for the continuing war between the Assassin’s and Templars.

“Connor is kind of an outsider from all cultures here, he’s half Mohawk, half British, so he doesn’t really fit within his own society, he brings this outsider’s perspective to all of these different conflicts,” said Masters. “We’re not bombastically saying, you know, ‘go America go!’.

The Revolution is a coincidence of the story, the real fight is to remove the oppression of the Templars.

Part of that historical research, also involved the team looking up the speech of that time, as well as the “slang and insults from the era”, coupled with more digging into discovering the type of accents and dialects that originated back then.

“We actually studied the census data on the makeup of the civilian population in Boston at the time,” said Masters. “So we knew there were a certain amount of English, Scottish, Welsh, Irish, Dutch people, and we actually tried to mix all of that into the audio.”

The question of what the English accent sounded like at that time – it’s really hard to say. We have the same thing in Quebec with the French accent, they say that Quebec French is closer to original French than modern French. But the reality is that both branched at the same time, right?

So it’s difficult to say which accent is a more accurate representation. We’ve no way of backing up the assertion.

If there’s one thing that I’ve always loved about the AC games, is the keen eye for historical accuracy. Those Roman ruins and Italian cities, while scaled down for the title, were pretty much dead accurate, and I’m looking forward to taking another animus jaunt to relive the turbulent founding of America.

After all, I’d watch the Hitler Channel for that kind of thing, but seeing as how their programming either revolves around World War 2 or fat people buying old stuff, I don’t see that kind of content at all.

Assassin’s Creed 3 is out at the end of this month, just in time for people to get their historically accurate redcoat-murdering on.
