I am sure you have heard before that the gaming industry is now *the* biggest entertainment industry and that Modern Warfare 2 has managed to earn over a billion dollars since it’s launched.

But as soon as you get into a conversation about this people bring up the fact that the game costs way more than a movie ticket and so you can’t compare the two fairly without taking all the other sides into account.

Well @pottan (a producer over at DICE) has tweeted an awesome financial breakdown between the smash hits Avatar and Modern Warfare 2.

The full image is after the break but the important things to note would be that the average movie ticket is costed at $7.20 while the average game is $59.99. it cost $230 million to make Avatar and only $50 million for MW2. Their advertising budgets were similar and Avatar is about to hit a billion dollars profit..

I have seen and played both and was completely blown away. I am still busy with the SP of MW2 and anybody who thinks this game is meh will never be pleased.

A little misleading. Only takes into account ticket sales for Avatar. Once you factor in merchandising, TV rights, DVD, Director’s cut DVD, Happy Meals, etc etc. you will be looking at a very different picture. Also Avatar has more legs. Will be comming to a small screen near you years from now. Will be selling DVDs for years.

I would rather have the profit from Avatar than MW2.

But still, shows how gaming has matured as a mainstream market.

    P.S I think MW2 was Meh. 😉

      That’s true GougedEye.

The sad truth is that in the not-so-distant future, MW2 (and pretty much every single game that we love) will end up in a bargain bin or given enough time, completely disappear off shelves (remember those PSOne classics G-Police or Colony Wars?).

Avatar, on the other hand, will still be profitable through DVD, Blue-ray or even digital sales and rentals. Apart for a few niche gamers, very few of us will actively try to play old games. :face:
