I don’t believe in using the 360 or PS3 to play old games, if you want to play a previous generation game then use your previous console.
But that logic has never made sense and it’s more of a personal issue thing for me. Anyway back to the point.
I found it be a really strange decision when Sony decided to remove backwards compatibility from the PS3 as they had such a huge PS2 market that they could have been tapping into but decided against.
It must have been a joint decision between cost cutting the PS3 itself and also trying to entice all those PS2 owners to purchase more PS3 games.
For whatever reason though the decision was made and then roundly condemned.
But there may be some light at the end of this very long tunnel, a rumour has bubbled up to the surface claiming that backwards compatibility is coming back to the PS3 in the form of a software update.
Now previously this was said to be an impossible task but you never know, they may have figured out a way to emulate the PS2 and if it’s true this would be a huge addition to any PS3 owner.
Obviously being a wild rumour we have no release date for this but since the rumour is only starting now I think it is safe to say it won’t happen this year.

If I buy a PS3 it must have backwards compatability since I never owned a PS2. Sony should have never removed it.

I believe it, you can get emulators for your PC for just about any oldish console. So if Sony put some of their resources onto this i’m sure it could be done.
Not sure if they should, but they could.

I have a 60gb and love the fact that I can play ps2 games, since I never had a ps2.
It gave me a chance to play God of War, Black, Shadow of Colossus etc. If would also not have been able to play rugby 08. But I still hope there will be a ps3 rugby game.
I think its better to have the choice. I would rather have ps2 support and choose not to use it, than the need to use it and not having it.

I doubt whether this will happen. Isn’t this the same rumour that Sony denied about a month or so ago? (Sorry, work doesn’t allow me to view that link).
I’m not all that informed about the detail tech stuff but I do remember reading that you cannot draw a direct comparison between a PS3/360’s CPU/GPU and a PC’s CPU/GPU. Something about a console’s GPU/GPU being “in order execution†while a PCs is “out of order executionâ€. Hence you can buy a PS3 that costs Sony say $600 to manufacture, yet a single Cell processor extension card for a PC costs like R18k.
I.e. its way easier to construct a software emulator using PC hardware than it will be when using console hardware and even on a PC the emulators chew up the resources.
Is there even a descend PC-PS2 emulator? The diffs between hardware acceleration and software acceleration is miles and miles apart.
Ofc I could be entirely wrong.

The latest version of PCSX2 is a great PS2 emulator. Granted you will need a Geforce 8800 or better graphics card and at least a P4 HT or Core 2 duo processor. It is improving all the time.
