Battlefleet Gothic: Armada continues to look impressive

Where we're going, we don't need eyes

When it comes to war machines, Warhammer is in a class of its own. That’s a universe of games with 40 000 years worth of the craziest battles and weapons, something that’s ripe for numerous video game adaptations. And there are plenty of them on the way, covering plenty of genres. But ain’t none of them have got an option to throw an entire weaponised church into battle.

That’s the idea behind the next Warhammer 40 000 game, Battlefleet Gothic: Armada. There’s been surprisingly little info shared about this game, but what is known is that it’ll be a PC strategy title focused on the usual Warhammer races: Imperial, Chaos, Elder, and Ork. It’s essentially a massive strategy game with oodles of ship combat, which marks several checks in my book. Here’s some video and pictures of it running on the Unreal 4 engine via AGB:

And that ship seen above? That’s an Imperial Emperor-class battleship (I think, although I’m certain our resident Warhammer expert will correct me), which the Warhammer wiki describes as:

The Emperor-class is one of the oldest Imperial starship designs still in use, due to the discovery of the Emperor-class vessel called the Divine Right that was fused into a Space Hulk for some ten thousand years. Emperor-class battleships along with the Retribution-class battleships are known to have a huge golden monument relating to the Imperium atop its bridge. The Emperor-class’ monument is a cloaked angel with a sword and shield.

The main armament of the Emperor-class is made up of its 8 squadrons of Shark Assault Boats or other common Imperial Navy Attack Craft. These are able to roam far from the Battleship and engage enemy capital ships that would otherwise be out of range of the Battleship’s main batteries.

Naturally, every race has their own form of capital ships, including the hilariously-named Orkish battleships DeathDeala and Slamblasta. I can’t wait to see a game running on max settings, spiral wildly out of control.

  1. Looks awesome but the music doesn’t fit the 40k universe at all. Too cheerful and tame 😛
