Bethesda teases new Doom ahead of QuakeCon

DoomE3? Who needs it? Certainly not the chaps at Bethesda, who’ve chosen this fortuitous time to tease the latest game in the fabled Doom series. They’ve done nothing but tease – revealing that they’ll actually be showing the game off at QuakeCon next month.

No numbers on the end, because that seems to be a crime on the end, this new game is simple titled “Doom,” suggesting it may just be a sexy reboot of the series instead of your average sequel. Without wanting to sound too enthusiastic for the sake of some semblance of journalistic integrity…HOW FRIKKING AWESOME DOES THAT CYBERDEMON LOOK? WHERE’S MY BFG?

Lucky folks who purchased Wolfenstein: The New Order on new-gen consoles and PC get automatic access to the game’s beta once that goes live.

Doom 4 was first hinted at by former id tech head John Carmack way back at QuakeCon in 2007, but the game was given a swift reboot to the junk at some point in 2011, with Bethesda saying that it "did not exhibit the quality and excitement that id and Bethesda intend to deliver and that Doom fans worldwide expect."

QuakeCon itself takes place from July 17-20, so expect a wealth of new Doom information around then.

So keen to see what they do with this… All 3 Dooms were great for their time (my personal favourite still being the original Doom). So I’m really hoping that this one does for the Doom franchise what Wolfenstein: The New Order did for that franchise – revive it!

I don’t think we’ll ever get that feel from the original again. Just the sheer speed and thrill of the originals (and that soundtrack) vs DOOM 3 which was much slower and a lot less fun even if far more immersive. That said, I’m still a fan and will be playing this one as well.

Totally agree – I’m a big fan of all 3. And, truth be told, Doom 3 has a special place in my heart (it was a shweet game and fantastic for its time). But yeah, that feeling when you first played Doom 1… That was a special feeling!

Don’t spoil my day. I had an argument a few days ago with a mate when I told him that SF>MK because MK has been recycled too much but I failed to factor in the Alpha series & VS series (on purpose) which would make SF have more sequels than MK. I like arguing with young ones, they know nothing.

I was playing SF2 before MK was released. I spent a good chunk of my adult life playing MK and MK2 (arcade and Sega Megadrive). Lost interest after that but when SFIV was released I had a proper pantsparty.
