Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 has DRM on the PS3?

Capcom’s latest downloadable release came out on the US PSN on 01 February. When Capcom released Final Fight: Double Impact last year, they did so with DRM included, but didn’t tell anyone about it. This time around, the moment you purchase BC Rearmed 2, you’re told “You must log-in to the PlayStation Network each time to play this game”.

Capcom is claiming that the DRM is for anti-sharing purposes; in other words only the account that purchased the game can ever play it regardless of whether or not there are other PS3 accounts on the same console. Of course, to sign into the PlayStation Network, you have to have the latest firmware installed. Constant firmware updates are at the forefront of Sony’s mind what with the recent root kit hack on the PS3.

DRM on downloadable titles is nothing new; even the Xbox 360 has them and if you’ve replaced your console recently then you’ll know that you need to sign into Xbox Live in order to play any of your previously downloaded games. That, however, is possible to remedy as the games are licensed to the actual console meaning you can transfer your licenses to a new console by following some easy steps on xbox.com.

This BC Rearmed 2 DRM is slightly different in that you will always need to sign into the PSN in order to play the game. The other kicker is that there is absolutely no online multiplayer to speak of in the game, so the mandatory PSN sign-in cannot even use that as an excuse.

What do you think? Is this a sign of things to come for downloadable PSN titles; another means to enforce firmware updates to combat the PS3 hack? Or is it this simply Capcom trying to eradicate license sharing of their games?
