Bioshock Infinite will appeal to alcoholic and psychopathic players

It used to be a much simpler time when game design was a more linear experience. Designers had an idea in mind, and gamers would follow point A to Point B, and clock the title. These days, player freedom is the name of the game. And whether you’re a nice guy or the sort of chap who kills hookers in GTA to get your cash back, it looks like Bioshock Infinite may have a spot for your demented mind.

“Sometimes we don’t know what’s going to happen. We’re writing a scene where the lead actor is like this psychopathic, alchoholic, because you don’t know what the player is going to do,” Bioshock Infinite Creative Director Ken Levine said, according to Kotaku.

They’re unpredictable. What the fuck are you guys going to do? Chill.

You have to embrace that lunacy, if you fight it and you lock the player in place it’s not the player’s game, it’s our game – but it has to be your game.

Well, that kind of makes sense. I like having choice in a game. I like that in Modern Warfare 2 I could slaughter half of Russia in the infamous “No Russian” mission, yet I was still able to choose not to do so if I wished it. I chose to do it, by the way.

Still, Levine has clearly made a world that is made up of these decisions to do some harm, although it seems that Elizabeth, your partner and the crux of the whole story, is going to be that angel on your shoulder that tempts you to not dip your feet into the dark side. A partner that Irrational Games says will actually be useful.

“I hate to say this, but she’s a giant machine, full of all this different content. All this writing all this acting, all this animation all this motion capture,” Levine said.

All these things that can happen, but may or may not. She’s a machine with all this human content put in, trying to yield this person.

According to Level designer Amanda Jeffrey, the key to making Elizabeth a useful extension of the game was to give her some emotional peepers.

Every time we were trying to make Elizabeth a better character to experience the game with, so generally the first thing we did was making her awareness of the world absolutely impeccable.

She has these incredible eyes that she can see the world in a completely different way, Liz can see what’s important to her.

BioShock: Infinite is out tomorrow on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Our review for it, will be up at 14:00 sharp today.

    SOLD!!!

I always thought the front cover was Sam Fisher looking glum after killing everybody at the AA meeting with his alcoholic double barrel The Adventures of Baron Munchausen pea shooter.

    Back to the Gin.

Ken Levine once tried to test me. I played his Bioshock with some fava beans and a nice chianti.

You know, after Yolandi’s article, I find this headline to be a little ‘click-baity’.
