Bioshock on the PS3

WikiEdit During an eventful online discussion yesterday SlippyMadFrog made quite an interesting discovery. Apparently the PS3 is a lot more powerful than anyone is giving it credit for.

Apparently according to Wikipedia you can install Windows XP onto a PS3 and then run some of the Xbox 360 “console exclusives”.

So in theory you could quite easily load up XP on your PS and start playing some previously exclusive titles like Bioshock, Viva Pinata or even Halo (2)….

I never knew this, mainly because it is entirely untrue and this is the exact reason why you cannot believe everything on Wikipedia. This has obviously been added by a slightly deluded fan with way to much time on their hands.

You can install a limited version of Linux on the PS3 though but I am yet to actually see a very good reason for doing that either as your access to the hardware is severely limited.

I wonder if they even have a version of Windows that can run on the cell processor yet?

It appears that you can run Windows, but via a CPU emulator running under Linux (as Windows is not available for the PowerPC architecture). While theoretically you could run many things in that manner, you will be measuring your FPS rate in frames per minute rather than second 😉

There is a very good reason to run Linux on the PS3, and that is computational applications such as this: http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2008/02/28/ps3s_put_to_use_simulating_blackholes/

The Cell architecture (or any modern GPU) is very well suited to scientific number crunching.

Thanks for answering the Windows questions…

However the chances of actually running Bioshock on that emuated Windows is minimal to say the least

Another good reason to run Linux on your PS3 is Mame! 🙂

But I don’t know anybody who has done it yet… 🙁

Well technically the PS3 “could” run an Xbox 360 exclusive but don’t get ahead of yourselves. By Xbox 360 exclusive it means a game not on a _console_ other than Xbox 360. So technically you could only run Xbox 360 exclusive games that are present on another non-console platform like Windows.
