Bioware is bringing back Ultima

Ultima. There’s a game that we haven’t heard from in a really long time. Well, not since Lords of Ultima in 2010, but the less said about that, the better. EA has dug up the venerable franchise for another go at classy swords and sorcery, tapping Bioware to help realise this freemium title.

Ultima fans, you might want to grab your legs and assume the bracing position, because this won’t be the sequel that you’re expecting. EA and Bioware will be developing the game for the Play 4 Free label, home of Battlefield Heroes, meaning that it’s out with the old style of detail and deep character development, and in with the cartoony accessibility.

Players will control their avatar in this new land, with EA mentioning something about a “Lady British”, and that the game will be “the first great Western RPG has been lovingly restored in Ultima Forever”.

Who knows whether or not that will ring true, but of you’re keen on returning to the Ultima lands once more, you can sign up for the beta over here.
