Bioware wants to “improve and build on” Mass Effect: Andromeda

I thought that Mass Effect: Andromeda was a damned good game – definitely better than the first game in the original trilogy. Much like that game, it had to spend a lot of time setting up its fiction.

“Mass Effect Andromeda is a fresh start – but in borrowing liberally from the first game it’s made many of the same mistakes. In spite of them, it’s an exciting space adventure that delivers everything that’s become important to Mass Effect: Great characters, fun exploration and a climactic tale of good vs evil.”

Yes, it has its problems, mostly involving wacky animations, silly bugs and some occasionally sophomoric writing but it is still a game worth playing. Still, there’s a maelstrom of angry voices on the internet, demanding that the beloved series gest the treatment it deserves. Bioware is listening, and, will reveal how they plan to better the game next week Tuesday.

Here’s Bioware’s statement:

“It’s been a week since we officially launched Mass Effect: Andromeda worldwide, and we couldn’t be more excited that our fans are finally experiencing everything we’ve worked so hard to create.

We’ve received quite a bit of feedback, some of it positive and some of it critical. That feedback is an important part of our ongoing support of the game, and we can’t wait to share more of our immediate plans with you on Tuesday, April 4.

In the meantime, keep your feedback coming. Our team is listening, working around the clock to gather information and plan out solutions to improve and build on Mass Effect: Andromeda.

Thanks for your continued support and for joining us on this journey.”

Some of said feedback is critical? I suppose the rest of it is just whiny babies on the internet. Andromeda seems to be a bit like Marmite; some people love it, others think it’s a crime against humanity. Anecdotally, most people I’ve spoken to are enjoying the Heleus out of it.

It’s more like “have to” and not “want to”

This is so typical “AAA” these days. Release unfinished product (or untested) and then afterwards say you’ll “make it better”. That’s not how it works. You don’t improve on a game over time, you expand on it. It should be ready and right from the get go.
I get that EA is probably at fault here, because it’s usually when companies are pushed for a release date when things like this happen, but they need to realise that it’s better to rather push out a release date, and admit something isn’t ready, than just chucking it out there.

Personally i think its awesome, MEA does so many things well, its just the spaces between those great moments thats a lil’ off, like it feels almost empty at times?. I def agree the game came out unpolished and and the writing’s quality does go sesame street at times. But Andromeda left me wanting more, that to me is the telltale sign of potential. It can only get better from here right?

That’s actually such a sad thing. Because the game does look excellent and although many were rooting for it to fail I feel that it deserved to have been better. It has such a loyal fanbase and I feel like the enthusiasm that went into making it just wasn’t there to really create the game it was meant to be.

    Talk is cheap.

They still haven’t updated the game since launch and the multiplayer constantly crashes, loses sound. If the host drops/crashes its GG.

    Highly frustrating.

Enjoying the game so far but holy hell do the errors get to me and small other things.
Trying so hard to ignore them.

I feel behind, seeing as some people have already finished the game.
I’ve clocked about +- 9 hours now into the SP and just finished the first segment of EOS.

Playing on Insanity is really living up to its name.

60 hours in, mostly bug free, aside from not being able to close the rewards menu when i debrief one of my strike teams.
The only issues I have are the ones that have been mentioned befor.
Bad character creation, cheesy writing, bad facial animations, annoying cutscenes everytime you check a new planet out (took me 30 minutes to scan 4 new solar systems last night) and actively giving every human/asari female character chubby faces.

Never been bothered with playing on the harder difficulties, but the game is fun, enjoying my time in andromeda and its good to be back in the mass effect universe again.
But its no Mass Effect 2 and Liam will never be Garrus, no matter how hard they try, Shepard and Garrus’ relationship was built in fire, Liam showed up and was like, “lets be BFFs, thanks”.

I am enjoying the game. Hopefully some of the issues get sorted. One I ran into the last 2 days, is where some Kett groups spawn, they are all standing in the same location. So my AoE skills just murder them before they suddenly scatter…

    *warning possible mild spoilers*
Big difference for me between ME1 and MEA, is that the opening of ME1 really grabbed me and got me invested not only in my character, but also some of the squad mates. Hell, I got some man-tears when Shepard got made Spectre. MEA has in my opinion a weak opening. I am getting more invested in my squad mates later on though (I am 30+ hours with my male Ryder), but being thrust into the Pathfinder role felt without reason, without impact, and the person who has to vacate the position – well who cares about them? I don’t know you, Mr Genetic Material Donor.

MEA opening could have been as follows:
    – You are Ryder, either one of the twins.
    – You and your twin are going through the training for the Initiative, possibly with Liam as the 3rd squad mate and Senior Ryder and Cora drilling you.
    – This is a good opportunity for the tutorial stuff to get handled.
    – You can experience the family dynamic of the twins and their father, fleshing out the history a bit and actually caring about Senior and your twin!
    – You get to know Liam and Cora
    – You can meet and interact with other members of the pathfinder team. Why do you only meet your team members after Cryo? I didn’t care about the one guy getting executed at all. Supposedly big moment had no meaning to me. At least the guy in ME1 was the new rooky on the team, so it made sense to have zero impact.
    – You could “walk in” on Senior or other Initiative brass talking with some ME1 or ME2 characters over some communication devices, like Liara. Or just some other random people. This gives a bit of nostalgia and gives you a better sense of the Initiative. You don’t even need extra animations for the cameos, just do voice communications.

All in all I am loving the game despite its flaws, and hindsight is always 20-20 🙂

I quite liked being thrust into the pathfinder role and having no idea what youre doing, but your comment on “no impact” reminded me of other situations, where it felt weird when the scenes had no impact
Stuff like, seeing your twin in a coma, finding the lost arks, discovering the exiles and all that, I was expecting Ryder to be all like “OMFG YOU’RE ALIVE? I CANT BELIEVE I FOUND YOU! HOW DID YOU MANAGE TO SURVIVE ON THIS PLANET?” and it was simply, “oh high, good job not dying, shall we get to business?”

        SPOILERS*========

        You have been warned

The arks having no effect, not even being priority Ops is just mind boggling, and How do they move between planet systems THAT fast without a single mass relay? The biggest missed opportunity was your sibling being AFK 95% of the game

“having no idea what youre doing” – that part in itself, of being the rooky thrust into the role for some reasons, is OK. But I would have liked a bit more “depth” around that situation. Like caring about your father. Or even “knowing” what the Initiative is. *too late to “fix” it now though 🙂

“OMFG YOU’RE ALIVE?…shall we get to business?” – looooooool
