Activision has been chatting to analysts ahead of the release of MW3 in a few weeks time and a certain slide was shown that is pretty incredible to look at really.
As we can see from the image above World at War sold 9 million HD copies to an install base of 38 million, MW2 managed to beat that by 10 million and then Black Ops went on to beat MW2 by an extra 4 million.
However that was on an install base of 74 million which has now ballooned to 92 million and if MW3 follows in MW2’s footsteps we could be seeing sales topping the 30 million mark. Which is an incredible feat.
What’s even more incredible however is how Activision has managed to get a large portion of those fans to also fork out for their $15 map packs.
In fact 18 million map packs have been sold since launch for Black Ops, out of an install base of 23 million. So don’t expect MW3’s map packs to be any cheaper as that little trick earned Activision $270 million.. somehow I don’t think it cost them that much to make a few maps and electronically distribute them.
