Blizzard is hiring a Director for a new Diablo game

Diablo might be getting a sequel soon

It’s been sometime since Blizzard spoke about their plans for new, expansive content for Diablo III or an entirely new entry into the series, and it seems that isn’t really going to change for some time. While the company works on extending the life of Diablo III (some would argue way past it’s sell by date), Blizzard are in the early stages of hiring some fresh blood for the franchise. New talent that will steer the franchise forward with a new entry.

Blizzard have listed (among many others) a job posting for a Game Director to take over the Diablo franchise, and specifically work on a new game. This comes after current game director Josh Mosqueira has decided to leave Blizzard, having been director on the game since 2013. You should recall that Mosqueira took over from Jay Wilson – a ten year veteran on Diablo that left the industry entirely after he quit in 2013.

In an email to Polygon, Blizzard had this to say.

“With Diablo III in a good place at this point, Josh felt that now was a good time to pursue other opportunities with minimal impact to the team. We’ll be filling the director role either from within Blizzard or externally.”

There’s no indication yet whether or not the job postings pertain to a new game entirely or a new expansion ala the brilliant Reaper of Souls. Although given the amount of time since both the core and expansion launches, coupled with the realization that this game is still years out, a smart person would probably put money on a new title. And that’s great, because there’s a lot a new director and fresh minds can bring to a franchise.

But if that loot hunting itch is still calling, Diablo III is constantly updating and trying to keep its player base from shrinking further. So you can jump into that. Or just play Overwatch instead.

Too soon for D4 (This is Blizzard, not Activision) but a new expansion would be nice

      “This is Blizzard, not Activision”

Can’t tell if you’re joking or don’t know the latter owns the former 🙂 Also considering this is just a job listing, not even production has begun on whatever they’re planning. So a Diablo 4 in say 2019/2020 isn’t too far fetched

        I haven’t even played D3 yet.
It doesn’t have controller support on pc, which I find so strange.

Play it on console if you want controller support… I’d hate playing the game on a controller.

Well, seeing how I’m a pc gamer, that’s not going to happen.
Most ARPGs have controller support on pc these days anyway. It’s just a preference, that’s all.

Yeah, but (if I remember correctly) Blizz has previously said that controller support will never come to the PC version of the game… neither will offline play (which the consoles have too). So, it’s KB, mouse and constant internet connection, or nothing.

Urgh. Then nothing for me. There are other brilliant ARPGs on pc that will do instead. The always online thing also doesn’t win them any favours.

I know Activision owns Blizzard, but they still design and publish their games as separate entities

If they hire someone who knows how a computer works as well then this time Diablo won’t be a complete mess at release on pc.

Luckily TESO showed everyone what a bad idea that is, so I think we’re safe.

Tip for Blizzard: look at the guys who made Path of Exile and try and make D4 more like that!

I played some Path of Exile but didn’t get that into it. Was pretty decent though. Victor Vran also has some awesome old-school ARPG style elements that they can learn from.

I sank quite a few hours into it, but my continual laptop issue prevented me from playing more. When I started playing D3, it immediately felt watered down. PoE just had so much more depth to it.
Never got round to jamming VV,

I think I was busy with too many other things when I tried PoE, so I didn’t give it enough time. I’ve always wanted to get back to it.
VV is just a nice approach with some cool mechanics that made it fun. Proper chaotic fights like the old-school ARPGs. And Geralt of Rivia’s voice actor made it fun, with lost of easter eggs too.

I found D3 a lot more fun than PoE. PoE really just bored the shit out of me.
