Blizzard showcase Overwatch’s Reaper – the twin shotgun wielding mercenary

Reaper

When I think of Blizzard, I think of how long it normally takes them to get a game from announcement to release. By their usual standards, it takes a good couple of years. Overwatch seems to be a rare exception however. Sure, we have no idea when the shooter will actually release, but at the rate Blizzard are firing off videos, it may be sooner than we think. Their latest gameplay preview showcases a character known as Reaper. He’s a twin shotgun wielding mercenary who likes long walks on the beach, sunsets, and cocktails. Also, that’s all a lie. His real passion lies in death and shadows.

Bio

He sounds like a pleasant fellow. Let’s get to know him, shall we?

Real Name: Unknown
Age: Unknown
Occupation: Mercenary
Base of Operations: Unknown
Affiliation: Unknown

…I don’t know what I expected.

Abilities

Hellfire Shotguns

Reaper tears enemies apart with twin shotguns.

Wraith Form

Reaper becomes a shadow for a short period of time. While in this form, he takes no damage and is able to pass through enemies, but cannot fire his weapons or use other abilities.

Shadow Step

After marking a destination, Reaper disappears and reappears at that location.

Death Blossom (ultimate ability)

In a blur of motion, Reaper empties both hellfire shotguns at breakneck speed, dealing massive damage to all nearby enemies.

Gameplay

Let’s see him in action:

Where Reaper appears, death quickly follows in this complete, unedited match from an early version of Overwatch, captured in 60fps on PC. Here, Reaper plays on the attacking team in the Temple of Anubis, a Point Capture map located on the enigmatic Giza Plateau.

The idea of twin shotguns is rad, especially on a character that is all about death. The fact that he can become a shadow and teleport is also awesome… yet out of all the character previews I’ve seen thus far, Reaper has interested me the least.

He just seems a bit dull and uninspired. If I were to play as him, I think I would get bored very quickly. I mean, his ultimate ability (from what I can see) needs the pushing of one button to deal out a dose of death to all in the immediate area. While satisfying, it requires zero effort really on the players behalf.

Maybe I’m alone in feeling this way though. What do you think? Does Reaper look like a cool character, or do you also feel that he is a tad dull?

Blizzard never had any local servers. I just can’t see this game taking off in SA.

The idea behind him sounds pretty cool, but I do tend to agree. He sounds really easy to play. Unless he is squishy and requires user input (skill) to stay alive. His Ultimate ability sounds like a FUuuuuuu button
