Blockbuster announces improved Blu-Ray Player Sales

Blu-Ray improves

Jim Keyes, CEO of Blockbuster, has been chatting to investors and has brought up the subject of Blu-Ray and the fact that sales of actual players has increased quite dramatically.

Since we are not in the US we are going to just have to imagine it, but apparently Blockbusters all over the country have setup Blu-Ray kiosks in store and are now selling between 2000 and 3000 players a week.

Those are pretty impressive numbers and according to Jim they are seeding the future market and are expecting to see future growth.

I think it’s safe to say that Blu-Ray isn’t going to become mass market in 2008 and my money is still on late 2009/2010 if it does manage to crack it.

    2000-3000 players a week seems pretty mainstream to me!

    Does that mean that there are BD players cheaper than the PS3 on the market? 😯

    Cheaper, slimmer and faster Blu-Ray players are on their way sometime later this year ➡

    This was always the way it was going to go. But i think it’ll only be “mass market” in 2010. HDTVs are getting cheaper and more TV is beginning to be broadcast in HD and this all helps.

    When TV starts looking better than DVD then people will start asking questions.

    I think we are looking for closer to 400 000 a week before we can call it mainstream to be honest.

    The US alone has over 300 million people so 4000 a week doesn’t even begin to touch that.

    Lol wot? That’s 4000 players from one ailing video rental store. Not 4k players for the entire US market. You have the Wall marts, Amazons, Fry’s etc. You have laptop and PC manufacturers. You have PS3s. I can gaurentee you that a lot more than 4k blu ray capable devices are sold throughout the US. And at the end of the day, it doesn’t matter what you use it for. It doesn’t matter if you use it on a PC, PS3 or standalone. It’s a BD device someone bought.

    well Mnet HD just launched, so a lucky few early adopters have been watching the olympics and a few shows in HD. It’s a start.

    @Fox1, we’ve had a R2700 BR player for months.

    And if you could find a link with the amount of Blu-ray sales I would be forever in your debt 😉

    Seriously, I have absolutely no idea how many are being sold but it is blatantly obvious that there is no mass market take up yet.

    2010? I gotta disagree, I think since the format war was won we’ve been seeing a pretty fast growth of sales from people who were on the fence. I really think that 2009 is gonna be the “mass market” starting year.
