Blu-ray vs. HD-DVD: Scam of the year?

Someone over at Fragland.net has been able to put into words how I have felt about this ‘war’ for quite a while now.

Basically that it is a scam of epic proportions.

Big titles like Blood Diamond and 300 get stripped of their extras on DVD so that HD-DVD and Blu-ray get that advantage. We aren?t getting much additional value anymore, instead the things we?ve gotten used to are being taken away in order to force us to adopt the new kids in town.

So who has noticed that? Where we used to get tons of added content on our DVD’s we are now just getting the bare essentials. It’s not like these DVD’s are even anywhere near full either. While Blu-Ray and HD-DVD offer some huge advantages in data storage they really offer very little in the way of movies.

I posted an article quite a while ago that spoke about how upscaled DVD’s are actually just as good as anything that HD-DVD or Blu-Ray has to offer at the moment. There is no real logical reason to get choose either format at the moment.

The more this supposed war drags on the more I start to feel that neither side is actually going to win we can add both of these formats to UMD,

    I couldn’t agree more.

The best comment I heard was along the lines of, once there is no perceivable price difference between HD disc and normal DVD’s people will start to migrate.

Just look how many folks are happy watching shaky cam rips off the net?

I am beginning to also see little benefit from HD movies overall. SA stocks have not changed in the past 5 months since the PS3 launch with maybe 1 or 2 new movies. Prices are still quite steep and upscaled DVDs still look as good as ever.

IMO BR or HD-DVD better start showing some big movies with big visual/audio differences to emphasize a wider audience to take note. I am about to borrow 300 in BR and will compare with my regular DVD version to really see if there is such a drastic visual difference or not.

One thing i’d personally like to see with these high density discs (i intentionally said density instead of definition), is a drop in the exhorbitant price of series boxsets. Just chuck a whole season of Stargate SG-1 (in normal DVD quality if you have to) and sell it to me, i’ll be more than happy watching it upscaled.

There are some awesome uses for having a disk with all that extra space. This HD vs SD is a no brainer. SD is good enough (expecially upscaled). Give us value for money. Matrix trilogy on one disk. The entire Star Trek collection on one disk etc etc.

My best guess is that the next “Lord of the Rings” type movie with still have it’s special edition on 2 Blu-Ray discs. Even though it’ll all fit on 1.

In fact, an HD movie (unless an epecially long one) will fit on a single DVD-9 disc. You just need the player to support VC-1 encoding.

The fact is on a 50 inch plasma or other big hi def screen you would rather want to watch the HD version of the movie than the SD version. The question is how much more people are prepared to pay for it.

A 50″ plasma would cost some serious bucks, I doubt there is a lot of people with that kind of setup, let alone any HD setup.
High Def movies are not that great in my opinion. DVD’s will do for many more years to come. The only people realy caring about this HD format war are people that bought a PS3. If HD-DVD wins then the PS3 is in SERIOUS trouble, game over. If BR wins, MS will probs release a Blu-Ray add-on for the Xbox, no big deal.

I think MS should stick to their current X360 as a gaming console. If BR wins then let the X720 have a BR drive to aid game developers cram more possible content into the disk if its at all feasible.

Actually if you look back at past DVD’s most of them had very little content, my something about mary has the trailer and audio options, same as my fight club and the first gen dvds 😀
