There have been some killer titles released this year already in Modern Warfare 2, Uncharted 2, New Super Mario Bros (nearly released), Forza 3 and Killzone 2 however all of those titles have something in common.
They are all sequels, not a single new IP in that entire list and if we include the rest of the year we can add Assassin’s Creed 2 and Left 4 Dead 2 into the mix as well.
So who has broken new ground this year and who has done it with the most sales?
Well the developers of Borderlands, Gearbox, have just announced that they currently hold the honour of “Fastest-selling new IP of 2009†after beating Prototype by 2000 units… and that’s even with Prototype having an extra 11 days in the month to rack up it’s kill count.
Dragon Age: Origins may also be a late contender for this title as the sales are exploding off the back of some good review scores but we are going to have to wait until November’s NPD stats are revealed before we can accurately measure that one.
Other notable nominees would be inFamous and… nope I can’t think of another. Batman and Ghostbusters aren’t exactly sequels but you couldn’t class them as new IP’s.
