Both Sides Will Lose DVD Format War

Yay yet another analyst who agrees with my completely non educated view on the format war.

And what would that be you ask? Well I don’t think either Blu-Ray or HD-DVD are going to become standard any time soon.

What with the cost of them, the confusion between the two formats and the little difference they offer compared to DVD upscaling I just don’t see a reason to choose a side yet.

Now more and more people are starting to move over to digital distribution instead of having the physical media.

Yeah it’s laughable to think we would get HD movies in SA over our Telkom lines but in other countries this is already a reality. Granted the movies lose some quality through compression and all that but really most people don’t realise the difference.

Not to mention the fact that better media such as the HVD is already developed so why would we choose a sub standard format now anyway?

My uneducated guess would be the same reason why CD’s are still around, what would be the point of an artist putting 11 or so songs on a dvd disk which is more expensive to manufacture. Now HD dvd or Blue ray are suitable for HD movies, you dont need a more expensive HVD for it. It comes down to cost efficiency to me?

I think the thing to remember is that it’s most often not the best thing that wins.

BluRay and/or HD/DVD will be huge by the time HVD gets to a consumer price point (if they ever get there).

They were supposed to release a $15,000 player for it last year June!
No idea what has happened since then.

Also, i think Sony has learnt a big lesson from the Betamax debacle. Now they have teamed up with many other major players and with the PS3 inclusion i feel that BD will win the format war.

Perhaps so, however, as a home theatre enthusiast, I am pretty keen for rather proper IPTV based services, I am with LazyGamer on this one, I don’t think this is going to be another VHS vs Betamax effort, this is about channels, you want to go and buy volumes all the time? or rather have this stuff digitally stored and available to you in High definition quality?
