Brink to Possess Human-like AI?

Brink

In a Q&A with Skewed and Reviewed, Brink director Richard Ham has made some rather bold claims. Like many developers before him, he’s claimed they’ve made a breakthrough in artificial intelligence, and that the game’s AI will be virtually indistinguishable from human players.

With Brink trying to tie the single and multiplayer experiences together, a strong AI is necessary.

"Our AI is capable of doing literally every action that you can," hypes creative director Richard Ham. "Brink‘s AI has to be great because of the way we blend single player and multiplayer gaming seamlessly. At any time, you could be playing against AI or against other human players, and our goal is that you can’t tell the difference.

"Not only are the enemies more ruthless and surprising, but your teammates are more self reliant and useful. In Brink, you won’t have to babysit your AI squad mates and make sure they do their jobs. Actually, if you’re not doing well, they’ll babysit you!"

This is, of course, a lie we’ve heard from countless developers before – and the truth more often than not results in sub-par AI that runs around in circles or always puts itself in the line of fire. Maybe Splash Damage have succeeded this time – and the only way we’ll know if they’ve perfected humanoid AI for sure is when we get team-killed, tea-bagged and called gay when playing the game offline.
