Bungie denies reports that overlay apps led to bans

Destiny 2 has finally launched for PC, and it’s one hell of a port on a technical level. Unfortunately, for a handful of players, it’s been a bit of a disaster. You may have seen reports that players were banned for using innocuous third-party overlay apps like discord, or streaming apps like OBS and XSplit.

Bungie says that’s not true. In an update on their forums (bungie.net), the developer listed a handful of details in handy-dandy bullet point form to clarify the situation.

The first, they say, is that the game cannot automatically ban people, and all of the people who had been banned were booted after a manual investigation. That contradicts a few reports from people who say that they were banned immediately after booting the game, but Bungie asserts that those who got booted “were using tools that pose a threat to the shared ecosystem of the game.”

As for those using third-party overlays, Bungie says they “did not and will not issue any bans for the use of overlays or performance tools, including Discord, Xsplit, OBS, RTSS, etc.”

In a later update, they did say that of the 400 people banned since launch, they had identified “a group of players who were banned in error.” Those people have since been unbanned.

There are still numerous reports of players who’ve been banned for “nothing,” but it’s also possible they’re just angry cheaters.

I’m pretty sure they have NO frikken clue as to why most of their bans were dished out.

I bet they were just testing to see if they could cheat so they could figure out if other people would be cheating.

Also makes a few of the reports of players being banner literally before they could even log in and make a character seem a bit…. iffy? I run Afterburner and Discord and I am still happily playing.

I heard, alot of these bans where bans coming from the beta, They where detected and banned on release day. Could just be talk though.

The entire reason there was a hubbub about this was the lack of communication from Bungie :/ In todays age you need to be shap.
