Destiny 2 PvP (6)

Destiny 2 is dropping many a tweak and refinement into its world when it launches in September. It wants to make navigating from world to world easier, new enemies will test your mettle and so on and so on. One thing it won’t have on launch? Dedicated servers, a move which developer Bungie spoke about in detail in their latest weekly update.

Basically that means that every game in Destiny 2 will make use of peer-to-peer connections to connect players. That’s fine for PvE engagements in Destiny 2, but also means that PvP rounds are going to once again favour the host player who runs that match in comparison to the dedicated server setup which gives everyone a fair shot and equal footing in the Crucible. Bungie has a plan to even the playing field for Destiny 2 players using this setup.

“Every activity in Destiny 2 is hosted by one of our servers,” Destiny 2 engineering lead Matt Segur explained in the Bungie update about the new server technology being implemented for Destiny 2.

we’ve got no regrets about the unique technology we’ve built for Destiny 2

That means you will never again suffer a host migration during your Raid attempt or Trials match. We’ve invested heavily in new server infrastructure for Destiny 2, including using cloud servers for gameplay for the first time. We really believe this is the best model for all of Destiny 2’s varied cooperative and competitive experiences. Engineering will always involve tradeoffs and cost-benefit analysis, but as a team we’ve got no regrets about the unique technology we’ve built for Destiny 2.

We think those controller-throwing lag-induced moments will be reduced for Destiny 2, but we can’t promise they’ll be eliminated. Fundamentally, we are trying to strike a balance between three hard problems: (1) make the game feel responsive, (2) make the game accessible to players all over the world, and (3) make the game fair for all. We’ll continue to refine that balance as players engage with the Crucible in Destiny 2.

As a team we’ve got no regrets about the unique technology we’ve built for Destiny 2.

Here’s the big question, specifically for those people interested in grabbing Destiny 2 on PC: How bad will the cheating be? With peer-to-peer services, the options to dial in some less than legit methods to win a few rounds in the Crucible are going to be plenty tempting for the type of people who made the early days of The Division on PC a living hell for others. Bungie is confident that they’ve got a lid on the situation before it even develops however, as Segur explained:

the life of a cheater in Destiny 2 PC will be nasty, brutish, and short

The PC platform poses unique security challenges for Destiny 2, but our security Ninjas have spent several years building a plan for how to engage with this new and vibrant community. We have a variety of top-secret strategies to ensure that the life of a cheater in Destiny 2 PC will be nasty, brutish, and short. And, regardless of what platform you play on, all changes to your persistent character are communicated directly to our secure data center with no peer-to-peer interference.

Personally, I prefer my own method of dealing with cheaters which was influenced heavily by the final scene of Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back:

They said Cheaters and PC. Usually that means nothing till you remember on what platform it is on. The same platform that hit the ban hammer super hard in Overwatch. I believe cheating will be minimized as many people already know Blizzards stance on cheating. Actually moving to the Blizzard App was the best move they could have done.

Right there is where I jumped off the hype train
