Bungie’s listening, and Destiny’s getting better

One thing I found odd with the retail release of Destiny was the relative lack of public events that happened, at least when compared with their frequency in the alpha and beta. That’s soon changing – along with a few other things to make the game just a little more fun.

Speaking to Joystiq, Bungie’s David Dague – or Deej if you like – confirmed that the number of public events would double.

“Bungie is hard at work behind the scenes, updating Destiny to make it better,” Bungie community manager David Dague said. “We’ve rolled out numerous patches, tuning updates, and server adjustments. For instance, the frequency of public events has more than doubled.”

“We’ll keep working to ensure our server performance remains stable for our already sizeable community, which has shattered previous records for any Bungie game to date. In an effort to keep our community up-to-date on these changes, patch notes will continue to appear on Bungie.net. The team is committed to a steady stream of post launch support, including the addition of some much requested features.”

Those changes have already happened, with Bungie confirming that yesterday’s 300mb 1.03 update doubled the number of public events you’ll see.

Here’s the changelog. As any online game with MMO flavour, the game will continually evolve and change with time – hopefully for the better. No amount of patching can fix the repetitive mission structure, the wooden dialogue or the dull, poorly-delivered narrative though.

Engineering

  • Fixes for Xbox One bootflow issues
  • Changes in network configuration to improve stability
  • Fixes for issues causing game crashes

Events

  • Public Events should occur twice as frequently in public spaces

I sometimes wonder. Won’t it just be simpler for devs and publishers to make offline games and get them out after proper internal QA? No constant server side optimisation or any other such nonsense which just eats away at the profit margins after sales?

It’s very hard to simulate actual online users worldwide in a virtual environment.

Which is exactly my point. Won’t it be easier to forego all this online crap and just go back to offline games where you don’t need to worry about all this crap and whether you environment is going to survive (which it won’t) and then having to fork out more cash as people need to fix and optomise.

Sure but then you basically remove all interaction with the world outside your couch. Who would then send me “Eat a bag of Dicks” messages after a game of FPS multiplayer.

People will also get tired of fighting AI.

I like the loot system, it would be worse if day 1 there were people running around with one shot kill auto-rifles and god mode armour. all my best stuff i got from co-op strikes and raids not grinding.

I read an article that describes Destiny as simply the best and worst game ever. The biggest issue most people still have that they need to sort out sharpish is this…

That second one, from what I’ve heard you don’t need to visit their site to sort it out, a simple Google search is enough.

I just wrote something up on this whole idea of patching fixing the things you say it can’t fix. I think that if done right, they really could. Sure, some things can’t change that much, but some pretty significant additions could be made through patching alone to really change things up, even as far as doing things like maybe adding more ‘cities’ like the watchtower, or adding new events and mission types to existing areas. Mix that in with a revised looting system and some rebalancing a la Diablo 3 Reaper of Souls and you could have a big shift.

Hypothetically, they could… hypothetically they could also patch Destiny 2 into Destiny 1 to make it the game we were all promised.

That’s an interesting read, thanks for sharing. I genuinely do hope that they can transform Destiny into something special. I have my reservations though as I think the issues facing Destiny are more directly related to the core experience, vs something like Diablo 3’s transformation. In my opinion the problem started when Bungie refused to concede that Destiny is a MMO. By doing this and coining exciting new terms like “shared-world shooter” they created a set of expectations.

exactly the route I am going. realised how hard it was after I got past that level. will also do some farming (not that I want to but might help).

what freaks me out is that some people I know went from level 20 to 25 from yesterday. but he is off from work for a week and heard from a friend that he was farming like mad.

You can probably get to lvl 23 with just lucky “light” armor drops. Still confused me how one of my mates already had lvl 26 only a week after release, especially given the weekly limit on tokens.

I am kind of surprised too at all the lvl 26′ popping up. But hey maybe they have had more time playing than the rest of us. got to lvl 21 last night by fluke and a few adjustments and almost a wee bit to go to get to 22.

a stupid question: where the hell is the vault of glass section bec I am looking on the menu and can’t for the life of me find it o.O. I used my glasses and everything
