Micro-transactions! Harmless fluff that every gamer absolutely wants to spend cash on, am I right? Oh hells no, I’m more incorrect than a certain God of War trophy in that regard. Micro-transactions are going nowhere for the foreseeable future, and when of the biggest shooters of the year adopts that model, then it’s pretty much here to stay.

Starting from today, Call of Duty Black Ops 2 on Xbox 360 will be offering you some cosmetic items in exchange for some of those sweet, sweet MS Points, according to MCV.

Called “Micro Items”, they’ve been described as “either personal customizations or nice little luxuries” by Activision’s Dan Amrich. Amrich also says, that these items are “small, specific ways to enhance your online experience”., and will have no impact whatsoever on gameplay.

Thing is, he might be  tad wrong on that. But first, a look at what 160 MS Points gets you in each sold separately pack:

  • Personalization Pack: Unique weapon camo, three targeting reticles and a custom calling card.
  • Flags of the World Calling Card Pack: Calling cards with national flag themes
  • Extra Slots Pack: 10 extra Create-a-Class loadout slots, space for 20 more emblems, 32 extra films, and 40 extra screenshots

That Extra Slots pack is going to make a difference with online play, if it is subtle at first. Experienced players can use those extra slots to tailor a more specialised soldier, one equipped for any situation. While it won’t make much of a difference towards more causal gamers, you can bet your pistol that professional players are going to make the most of this new advantage.

Also releasing today, is NukeTown 2025 as a free map for players. Remember that map? It’s the one that was supposed to be exclusive to preorder customers only. Also, I now owe Gavin R10, as he totally called this.

Expect the micro-transactions fluff to hit PC and PS3 later this year.

  1. End of days I tell ya. I’m certain somewhere in the book of Revelation there is a mention of these microtransactions. Think its called Pestilence

Nothing wrong with these micro transactions as long as it does not affect gameplay. If you want to pay for more personalization then go ahead.

You see, the thing is this kind of micro-transaction is ok in the greater scheme of things. You don’t lose out if you don’t purchase it and it isn’t giving anyone an unfair advantage.

The real problem though is that the suits won’t just stop with this. When this starts selling, they are going to make sure MT’s are required and will start with the pay to win model and everything just becomes ridiculous.

If only they could stop at this and not go any further….

See, first I got excited about Black Ops 2 when I read a well written review here on Lazygamer. Looking like it could possibly be better than the crap they’ve been releasing since CoD:MW2, I had to find out the hard way by installing and locking it to my Steam Account, that it was indeed still crap. Stopped playing it. Never looked back. Now with this news, I’m going to throw it out the fraking window!
