Call of Duty: Black Ops to be fully 3D enabled… on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360

I have to admit I didn’t see this one coming at all. In the dead of night (for us) a select group of journalists were secreted into Treyarch’s Los Angeles studio to be shown a yet to be announced feature in the upcoming Black Ops.

The feature that caught everyone off guard was that Black Ops will be released in full stereoscopic 3D on all three platforms. That is to say PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 gamers will be able to play the entire game in 3D on launch day for no extra cost.

What’s more surprising is that it is apparently really well done and during some extensive playtesting it was agreed that the 3D capabilities absolutely enhance the experience without negatively affecting the performance.

So secretive have Treyarch been of this feature that Microsoft, the company who up until now has been allergic to 3D, has only just found out themselves.

There are 3 things to learn from this

  1. Treyarch are worthy of respect for being the first to market with a real AAA 3D title
  2. 3D is easier on games than movies (they said that)
  3. The PS3 isn’t any more 3D capable than any other hardware device out there.

I’ll still stand by my argument that 3D is a waste of time and not something I am planning on wasting my money on, well not until they release quality 3D TV’s that don’t require glasses at least.

But I do admit that I am intrigued at playing Black Ops in 3D… I think I may just sneak a console into LG’s showroom and test it out there.
