Call of Duty: Ghosts hits $1 billion in day one retail sales

Call of Duty: Ghosts has me conflicted. Not the game itself, mind you. I have no interest in the game. I did, however, state that I thought it might be the only property capable of outselling GTA V this year. Later on, I said I didn’t think Ghosts would manage to outsell even Black Ops 2. I was wrong about one of those.

The game has reportedly done a billion in sales on its very FIRST day of retail availability; a feat that took GTA V 3 days to match – though that game sold 800 million’s worth to actual consumers in a single day. This is sell through to retailers, naturally, and not copies in homes. That is still a ludicrous amount of Call of Duty.

“Call of Duty is by far the largest console franchise of this generation,” Activision CEO Bobby Kotick said. “More people have played Call of Duty this year than ever before, logging four billion hours of gameplay. And in the last 12 months, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, including its digital content, generated more revenues than any other console game ever has in a single year.

“Although it is too early to assess sell-through for Call of Duty: Ghosts, it’s launching at a time when the franchise has never been more popular.”

For once, it seems the analysts were right. Speaking about Ghosts’ relatively low Metacritic scores, Cowen and Company’s Doug Creutz said he didn’t believe the scores would have much impact on the game’s sales.

“Ultimately, we don’t think that sales of this year’s title will be impacted enormously by these reviews. Our concern lies more with next year, when Call of Duty will face competition from several new next-gen shooters, including EA’s Titanfall and Activision’s own Destiny. To the degree that CoD may become a bit of a ‘been there done that’ experience for gamers, we think it is vulnerable to losing share as new product enters the market.”

Call of Duty’s mammoth sales seem to continue unabated. Same as it ever was. I really want to find out what actual sell-through numbers look like next week.

Apparently huge amounts of lag, and yes if it requires a 2gig patch before you can even start to play then it was broken when it was sold. I haven’t played it yet but I want a refund.

I’ve bought 2, Diablo 3 on console, and Injustice: Gods Among Us on console. The rest? Specials and humble bundles. And GoG. Last year I bought Borderlands 2 day 1, and I still don’t regret that. But in the last 2 years, those 3 are the only day 1 purchases.

Don’t have any source material for you except than when you complete the 4 disk install Steam will continue to download a 2gig multiplayer patch. It was an activation patch it would be small but a patch of this size is either a fix or missing content either way it says the game is not complete as sold.

          • ToshZA

            November 7, 2013 at 09:01

Pretty much this, yeah. They don’t have to care, because their target market doesn’t care. Why are we as gamers complaining when we won’t be buying the game anyway? We aren’t the target market.

Yes, its copy/paste. Yes, people are stupid for buying it every year. But that’s what they want, so why would the company behind CoD do anything else? It’s making them rich.

Here’s a tip for anyone to get rich: find something that stupid people like. Sell it en masse, and then repackage the product once a year, give it a slightly updated name, and voila. You’re rich.

          • NostalgicMossel

            November 7, 2013 at 09:14

Yeah, it’s not like we see people complaining about Apple bringing out the same devices each year! Oh..wait.

People just hate when something is succesful and they dont personally like it.

            November 7, 2013 at 09:20

You speak truth, but come on, let’s all be honest here: If we had to hate games because of cutscenes, what games would we be playing? Cutscenes have always been, with the exception of a few games, crap.

          • ToshZA

            November 7, 2013 at 09:22

Blizz got that shit yo. But yeah otherwise I mostly skip cutscenes. Fill in the gaps myself.

But I’m talking about the entire package. It really is just more of the same. New levels, new swimming fish, a dog, but its still the same game. It hasn’t evolved, its just added new levels and a few extra touches.

            November 7, 2013 at 09:27

Its the principle I have a problem with. Whats next, they going to release the same game next year with a couple of tweaks and different name? O wait, never mind 😉
But in all honesty, if you have a billion in sales on the first day. How can you justify reusing assets like this? Yes it makes time sense but you have buckets of cash you can throw on the development department and you wouldn’t even flinch. And like the Admiral said below, if you already have this stigma floating around, why would you want to entertain it?

They can justify it because it means nothing to the masses. The masses don’t want to think about a new game, they just want to pretend to themselves they have something new.

        • Brian Murphy

          November 7, 2013 at 08:46

It’s a game that they’re going to make something north of a billion on, I think they can spare the time and company resources to ensure that the assets aren’t copied from previous games. Then again, it doesn’t matter, every bottom feeding mollusk from here to timbuktu will buy it anyway.

Every year this thing sells billions, and every year the whole world complains that it is the same shit just in a different package. Like literally the same shit. No new graphics engine, no new physics engine nothing new at all. Wait I forget, the fish swim away when you get close.
I am really losing all faith in humanity.
I have yet to read a good review on this game. Not a single review has a lot of good to say about the game. The game seems to be completely broken in all aspects of it. There are a lot of copy pate going on. WHY WHY WHY buy the game.

The only decent CoD game was MW. I just don’t understand HOW? GTAV took about 5 years to come out? At least Rockstar WANTED to make a great game. Activision and Infinity Ward release the same damn game every year yet people still buy it?

The answer is simple. People who like competitive fps games will buy CoD and Battlefield. Because a new game comes out every year they buy it, there are new maps an most people will be online playing that game. Nothing sucks more than an awesome mp game that no one plays. But I must agree, they dont have to do it, rather just do what Valve does and create CS and let people play it for the next 10 years.
No one buys it for the sp campaign, I played it last night and although it migh’ve been awesome 5 years ago, it’s just plain boring. But multiplayer on the other hand…

Anyways, CoD isn’t made for gamers. It’s made for people who want new levels in their game. Its a glorified add-on pack every year. It’s another WoW. Its only fun if you like doing the same thing over and over and over. And over.

CoD 1, finished. CoD Blops 1, got half-way through, bored. Watched the others (youtube you beaut) and just didn’t care for them. I just can’t see the appeal. It just looks to be exactly the same thing. Shoot this, run there, shoot that, survive this wave of enemies, blow this up. Next level.

All of the game producers around the world are wondering why they even bother with games like The Last of Us.

Lets all jump on the band wagon and give the kids what they want. While we get moooola bucks in return.

Expect the next gen to be nothing but FPS games.

In fact there is no reason to even have a next gen. COD just proved that. Next gen will only be designed around improving the SOCIAL tools to make Virtual Murder simulators even more fun.

Come a long way from Trum Cards but if you think about it, COD is exactly the same thing. MY DICK IS BIGGER THAN YOURS. It is in our Primal brain and nothing is more enjoyable than owning another human in a virtual world.

If I was a suit that had to bank roll another game, this will be the game, using the old 6 year engine in the process.

The venue doesn’t matter, hence why most families enjoy going to the spur. The kids love it. Happy kids = happy family. That’s life math 101. (FYI, I don’t even go to the Spur and I’m aware of this. I’m more a of healthy, eat at home guy… or fish…..or any place that does a mean half kilo, still digesting this mornings grass, jumpy steak…..or shake your booty at repeating electro music place…or play some pool bang your head rock shack place…or…well you get the idea. Why have a virtual horse in Darksiders? (I renamed him Binky by the way.) Why have a V-Rotweiler in GTA V? Why put in virtual animals in a GAME when you can just have the real thing? That is your argument? Really? The answer is very, very simple my friend. Because it is FUN! FUN FUN FUN! Having a kick @ss war bread puppy by my side…oooohhh the thought….just got goose bumps…and I shall rename him…well I don’t know yet, have to meet him first by spending money on this Sh*tty game franchise. And in case you haven’t noticed (or you’re still too young to know this).. That is life. Life is repetition, the more things change, the more they stay the same? Ring a bell? The difference is what you make of it. Sure you can go through life all miserable and grumpy and complaining about blah blah virtual animals blah blah blah crap game blah blah I’m high and mightier than these franchises blah blah PUKE….OR, you can remove the broom from yonder nether region and start having some FUN with what you got. Seriously. Life is too damn short to complain about petty silly things. Enjoy the game for what it is… a very cool FPS (new) war STORY. No two stories are the same, no matter how much they look and feel the same. There in lies the beauty of life. Broaden your horizons and stop getting caught up in your set ways. You just might get a surprise.

Ok I don’t play COD. FPS are really not my cup of tea, I did enjoy borderlands until the shitty end. But here is my take on it. COD players like playing COD and they don’t want a new game, what they are paying for is another years access to the same game. Sure some guys like the SP and for them some years will be better than others but to the vast COD fans out there the SP is some tacky add on, something to play to while away some hours when the internet is down or lagging. Everyone likes to poke fun at COD players, but if you really are judging someone on what games they like you may as well judge them on their skin colour or gender. Anyway this game will sell until something better comes along or until the burnout is so bad.

GTA 5 made $800 0000 day 1 from people buying the game at retail. Where as Ghost made $ 1 billion from selling to retail, it doesn’t mean that people actually bought $ 1 billion worth of stock at retail on day 1 of Ghosts release.
Just to add Rockstar announced it’s sell through and not sell in, at retail. If Rockstar announced GTA 5 sell in, then it would have been more than $ 1 billion.

Last year with Black OPS 2 it was announced that the game made $ 1 billion day 1 but they only made $ 500 0000 from people buying the game on day of release.

GTA V’s Sell through was 800 million i one day, sell in in three days was 1 billion. Direct comparison. I believe GTA V sell through has exceeded that number quite significantly now though.

You so confusing me with sell through and sell in.

Sell into retail. Sell through to consumer.

If GTA 5 made $ 800 million by selling retail stock to people, then just image how much retail stock there was in the 1st place. I think it was like 29 million copies of GTA 5 was sold into retail.
Within 3 days $ 1 billion was made by selling though to customers, i think it was like 16-17 million copies of GTA 5.
That’s why GTA 5 won sales records.

        So, GTA 5 = sell-in of 29 million units and sell through of $800 million (day 1), $ 1 billion (day 3)

        So Ghosts = sell-in of $ 1 billion and sell through ???
        Black Ops 2 = sell-in of $ 1 billion and sell through of $500 million (day 1)
        MW3 = sell-in of $1 billion and sell through of $400 million (day 1)

Oh yes, just to add. It took James Cameron with Avatar 17 days to reach $1 billion in sales. It took MW3 16 days to reach $1 billion in sales. It took Black Ops 2 15 days to reach $1 billion in sales.

It took GTA 5 3 days to reach $1 billion in sales.

Do you really think Call of Duty Ghost which is the same old shit, is going to beat GTA 5 in the fastest billion in sales? I think not.

Do you understand between sales to retail and sales to customer? Ghost was 1 billion of sales to retailers, including ps4, xbox 1. Gta5 was sales to customer (end user) for only ps3 & xbox360

I do not know why Lazygamer wrote this article in such a misleading manner. And with a review score of 8.3 for Ghosts, it just makes me wonder, when I look at other websites. I guess view counts and comments are more important than ….

Activision has admitted that Call of Duty Ghost has sold less than Black Ops 2, day 1 sales to customers.

So the real story here is that Call of Duty couldn’t beat GTA 5 with day 1 sales to customers and Call of Duty couldn’t beat GTA 5 with fastest billion made selling to customers in the entertainment industry.

I am glad that I used Lazygamers review score of 8.3 and this article’s perception of how more people are buying and playing COD this year than any other year, to have me not buying Call of Duty Ghost this year.

Lazygamer’s reporting sucks these days. Not only are we reading stuff that websites like Kotaku and IGN have reported on already, it misleads us with this reporting. Reading the articles are like navigating a minefield full of grammar and spelling errors. When trying to help and correct they get all defensive with their READERS!!
Reviews are STILL LATE! We can’t count on them to review a game in time for us to decide whether to get the game or not on day one. By the time their reviews come out the masses of people playing the game have had enough word of mouth going around for us to decide.
It is like they cater to the few regular community members and try to entertain them. Not realising that there are thousands, if not more, readers who do not post comments.
The community sucks and trolls every newcomer who post a view different to their collective sheep mentality. If they are not careful trolls will come to play and the whole comments section will be a trolling session. I used to love this site and posted regularly. But I can’t see why I must receive my news late, reviews late, read through spelling and grammar errors and then deal with a bunch of arrogant, smug community members when commenting and looking for constructive debate. (Try it, as a newcomer go and defend your choice of choosing Xbox).
It simply is not worth it anymore, I will go get my news fresh and NEW on other sites.
      Goodbye Lagz.

    I lost interest after MW2
