Call of Duty: Ghosts on the Xbox One got worse

Spider-man is such a dick.

Call of Duty: Ghosts doesn’t run particularly well on either of the new consoles. On the Ps4, though it’s running at 1080p, it’s subject to a few random frame drops that makes the experience far less smooth than it ought to be. On the Xbox One though, it’s buttery smooth, especially in multiplayer – even if it does run at half the pixels, at 720p. Or at least, it used to be. The latest patch for the game has introduced a few performance hiccups.

Users have complained of poor frame rates since the release of the new Onslaught DLC and its accompanying stability patch, so Eurogamer’s Digital Foundry went and counted frames. They’ve confirmed that yes, performance is no longer the smooth 60 fps you’d expect from Call of Duty.

“Kicking off with a look at Stonehaven, it’s immediately obvious that things are not quite right. While the game does indeed hit 60fps in this stage, frame-rates are dramatically impacted when the whole level is in view, with metrics varying between 46-60fps as we run across the landscape,” Digital Foundry’s David Bierton said. “As frame-rates fall below the desired 60fps target, we also see the appearance of some screen-tear, adding some judder, making drops in smoothness more noticeable.”

Stonehaven isn’t the only level affected, and it gets worse. Just aiming down the scope of a sniper rifle very nearly halves the framerate.

“…aiming down the barrel of a sniper scope can see significant drops down as far as the mid-30s – something we never encountered before in ether next-gen version of Ghosts during multiplayer. As a result of the fluctuating frame-rate we can feel a clear reduction in the responsiveness of the controls, while on a visual level the introduction of stutter impacts the smooth flow traditionally associated with Call of Duty multiplayer action.”

While the poor performance doesn’t quite break the multiplayer, it is far removed from the series trademark 60fps, ruining the feel of the game. It’s something that could, presumably, be fixed with another patch but it doesn’t speak well of the Xbox One or the developers that their game can’t match the performance on the old consoles.

It’s also a bit laughable that the now annual Call of Duty Championships will be played on Xbox One. Let’s hope for the tournament’s sake that the patch to fix the patch to fix the game that was released broken is available in time.

You know testing a patch is something that happens after release date? You know, when your testers (aka players) logs it on your Bug tracking software (aka the forums)

Oh yes, I forgot. That’s where you pay them to beta test stuff for them. It’s so awesome. You get games so much faster this way now.
