Call of Duty has “ruined FPS players”

The first person shooter, love it or hate it, is probably the most prolific genre in video games; largely responsible for the explosive growth of videogaming as a mainstream, socially acceptable hobby. It started out on the PC, with games like Wolfenstein 3D, Doom and Quake, but found a home on consoles thanks to great games like Goldeneye and Perfect Dark on the N64, and later revolutionised by Halo on the first Xbox. Now though, when you say “FPS,” thoughts almost immediately turn to “Call of Duty,” a series of games that, says Tripwire Interactive’s John Gibson has “ruined FPS players.”

“I think that single-player shooters are getting better,” Gibson said to PC Gamer. “I think they’re finally coming out from under the shadow of the Hollywood movie, overblown “I’m on a rail” linear shooter.”

You know where this is going.

“I’m talking about Call of Duty-style shooters. In the late ‘90s, you had the original Deus Ex, which was an RPG-shooter. And those kind of games almost took an eight year hiatus. And I’m so excited to see them coming back with interesting gameplay.”

Gibson seems to hate the on-rails experience provided by games like Call of duty and its myriad clones – but embraces the return of a non-linear narrative and RPG elements.

“Like the Fallout games, even though their shooting mechanics could really use some improvement, just mixing a really cool story, but not a linear story, one that you create yourself. The melding of RPG elements and shooter elements has been great. I’ve seen this reflected in a lot of the reviews, it’s like, “Okay guys, we’re tired of this on-rails experience.”

Where he really takes umbrage is on the multiplayer side of things – where he believes Call of Duty has had a negative impact.

“On the flip side,” he affirms “I’m really discouraged by the current state of multiplayer shooters. I think that, and I hate to mention names, because it sounds like ‘I’m just jealous of their success,’ but I’m really, I feel like Call of Duty has almost ruined a generation of FPS players.”

But what does he mean by that? It seems COD has turned gamers in to whiny crybabies who want everything to feel the same, always.

“When I was developing Action Mode [for Red Orchestra 2], I got a group of people that I know that are pretty hardcore Call of Duty players. And my goal was to create something that was accessible enough for them to enjoy the game—not turn it into Call of Duty, but try to make something that I thought was casual enough but with the Red Orchestra gameplay style that they would enjoy. And we iterated on it a lot. And just listening to all the niggling, pedantic things that they would complain about, that made them not want to play the game, I just thought, “I give up. Call of Duty has ruined this whole generation of gamers.”

In short, people complained about everything because of one thing – “it doesn’t feel like Call of Duty,” which seems to be the metric that a majority of gamers use for their shooter comparisons.

Read the entire interview over at PCGamer – and get a little insight in to why everything does, and will continue to try and emulate Call of Duty’s successes, for better or worse.

I have played most of the cods, but I don’t think I will be playing Bf 4 or CODBLOPSSWE2014/4. Its just more of the same. copy paste routine with different shades of grey/brown used and a “new” shock moment to try be controversial and get the old people riled up about how bad games are. Its just blaaaah now. But they do have their place I would rather all the CoD fans be playing cod then coming over to more enjoyable multiplayer games bitching about how I am a noob and “fucking” my mom.

Alll being said my favorite shooter of this generation was bulletstorm. Why bulletstorm you ask? Because it was FUN.

My dad has played more CoD due to him testing gaming rigs that he sometimes built for rich people And he sucks at it, but he has played more of it than me. But to this day I have not played one CoD.

I did buy Battlefield 3 for the MP last year, and I actually enjoy it. So I’m not against it.

Have never even bought a CoD game, and don’t see myself ever buying one…. I’m all about the story, not the graphics or speed or rendering or whatever else people keep on clambering about!!

Dont people get tired of hating on CoD its not easy to replicate what they do cause its actually not easy. I love the CoD series both the singleplayer and multiplayer and the multiplayer shines in a way cause it incorporates both social and competitive play very well and that takes a lot of hard work to do.

A lot of people will criticize and make fun of CoD being the same but the work that goes into providing a game that delivers on both a multiplayer and singleplayer level is a lot ask other developers they hve tried and failed and with the coming of the next gen consoles i foresee this year’s CoD breaking even more records and giving us fans lots of hours playing the multiplayer cause thats what they do best..:)

Who cares?? Yes COD is the best selling, but its not the only FPS game out there! There are many more great FPS games.

If you dont like COD dont play it! I dont understand why people make themselves so upset over a game that they dont like….just go and play the games you enjoy and dont bother with the ones you dont like. Easy as that!

The gaming community is getting very negative these days, its like no one plays games for the fun of it any more…

I think the point is that because of games like COD, the OTHER choices are drying up. Why would an independent company make Mirror’s Edge 2, and make no money, if they could replicated a FPS like CoD and make a billion in 15 days?

        True that…

One thing I will admit, and it pains me, is that COD does have a good SP….although it is on the short side…and I have a feeling that the COD developers was waiting for the next gen consoles to reveal their new engine for the game, but thats just my theory…

At least there are still some decent developers out there that go out of the way with the new games they make, to bring us gamers a new experience, games like Far Cry and Borderlands, so all hope is not yet lost!

If you count the people in Iceland, and you’ve never been anywhere else, you can find that 99.9 % of the worlds population (the world YOU live in) is white. Using those findings, with the fact that the Icecaps are melting, you can argue that white people are responsible for global warming. Just because you think it to be true doesn’t make it true does it? Most Battlefield players abhor COD style gameplay. Are they then the select few who weren’t ruined by COD? Bullshit. I think the guy is talking out of his ass.

What’s even more interesting is that you can see who is a COD player and who’s not, purely by noting their play style and behaviour. While you do have terrible players in other FPS, 9/10 times those are COD gamers.

When you run and gun, in a game that discourages it, and you still continue (even after repeatedly seeing your behind).. you…my young friend have been ruined by COD. The only solution is to set your COD disk alight, and go on a 10 year long gaming hiatus. Only through meditation and introspection will you once again be a real gamer.

I think thats quite a bad generalization they are a lot for great CoD players i know who do very well in other games besides CoD.

CoD does cater for team based gameplay especially when playing objective based game modes as a team. Why blame a game if a player cant play the objective or adapt to a different gameplay, that seems irrational.

Quite the opposite actually, you can be rather good at most FSP’s but you’ll be quickly humbled by the pros on COD…Sound like sour grapes to me…The x factor in the dynamics/physics of movement and feel coupled together with the intensity is what sets COD apart from most and hence why it’s so popular…

I always felt that the “humbling in COD” was related not to the skill of the player but rather the speed of their connection. A sad drawback to peer-to-peer servers 😛

        And apparently Treyarch agrees: http://n4g.com/news/1207802/treyarch-deranking-black-ops-2-players-for-having-high-speed-internet

the shots and reflexes of the pros are ridiculous.
was playing against takbok in his prime, sniper shootout to determine the match, and i sat there and i did not have the reflexes to get my cross hair on him in time, so much pressure and so much accuracy coming out from takbok.

its not like I was bad, at the time i was part of 8or9 and in their 3rd team, but i just did not have it in me to compete with the top guys.

and i agree on the dynamics and movements, the gameplay has always felt smooth and natural

No… Players ruined themselves. An easy arcade shooter alternative was presented, and players played that nonstop. Even now, most of the people know it’s shit, but everyone keeps buying it. We should really stop blaming the games for the mistakes we make.

It’d be easier for me to bash CoD here, but I’d also be a hypocrite.

And when a fun shooter does come out (i,e., the aforementioned Bulletstorm) no one plays it. Is that CoD’s fault? Please.

You are correct players do ruin themselves, what I was trying to say which may have been misinterpreted was that CoD is not for me, while CoD 4 was excellent as it changed things brought about changes to the FPS genre that was much needed, Same when WoW came out, and more recently the same as GW2 however when a game gets stale and copy paste tactics start becoming common place people start to resent that, because we end up with more of the same FPS FPS FPS, and new ip’s don’t get the attention they deserve and unfortunately fail. Its like Wildstar which comes out later this year looks like a pretty decent little MMO do I back it to succeed, no.

Never has the line you either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain been more appropriate. I hope I quoted it right.

The problem is Call of Duty and Activision are essentially Honey Boo Boo and TLC (the TV channel). It starts of all harmless, and then before you know it, the Learning Channel ceases to be about learning, and only about braindead, contrived reality TV shows. It doesn’t just stop there, instead it infects other franchises, and before you know it, the once proud Bioware, copy and pastes a sequel to one of my favourite RPGs of the last 10 years…. leaving me, mumbling about “one caves”, “ugly ass Na’avi elves” and “stupid… empty city” to friends and family.

Put simply.. Call of Duty is a cancer. It’s a cancer of mediocrity and greed. It deserves to DIE!

      was the opposite for me

singleplayer hasnt grabbed me since CoD2

      the multiplayer however
      40 000 cod4 kills (estimate)
      17 000 MW2 kills
      400 MW3 kills

sure the later games are alot less interesting, but the older iterations were fantastic.
      cod4 made competative gaming awesome
      mw2 made casual gaming easy.

There is no problem with popcorn entertainment games such as COD.

I myself do enjoy the mindless run and gun. The problem is the entire industry wants to emulate this and unfortunately one can only have so many popcorn games before you give up on gaming completely.

Also, I don’t mean to be rude, but the only one to fault that Red Orchestra 2 wasn’t a really succesful realistic shooter is the dev team for releasing the game in such a poor state. Sure, they fixed it A WHOLE YEAR LATER, and that’s too late for most gamers.

But, sure, it’s easier to blame Call of Duty. I don’t like CoD, even though I did consider CoD 4 to be excellent, and MW2 and Blops 2 to be decent, I only rent those to try them out.

Oh! let’s take a random stroll to some irrelevant part of the map to cut up some innocent animal and use it’s skin to make a purse for myself…Wow!!, now that’s satisfying indeed. I feel like so much more of an intellectual because the game of my choice involves a fraction more thought…pfffft!!

Each game type has it’s pros and cons…Linear – get in, have a blast and get out….Sandbox – think, plot, execute, save and move on….. Enjoy each for what they offer and stop blaming a franchise for the lack of prosperity in your projects…it’s pathetic.

I’ll never play another CoD game, and it’s because of what happened between CoD 2 and CoD 3. I couldn’t care less what the game looks like, how popular it is, how awesome the story is. I will never, give my money to those fucks again. On principle, I won’t be satisfied until every person involved in the CoD 2 to 3 debacle is out of a job.

What does that statement have to do with your ridiculous analogy?…my use of the word ”usually” caters for people who don’t fall under that description…You seem to have a chip on your shoulder (as with most COD haters) that you’re a better gamer because you play particular alternatives…That’s just narcissistic…in any event, haunting is hardly a description fit for your response…

          • mornelithe

            March 15, 2013 at 13:26

What ridiculous analogy are you referring to?

How could you guess I had a chip on my shoulder over CoD? Does it show? Maybe educate yourself on the CoD 2 to CoD 3 issue, and you’d understand my anger at the franchise.

Actually haunting is an appropriate description as the saying infers repeatedly having to address the issue. Ergo, me responding every time you respond.

Never said I was a better gamer, I said Stalker and Arma require more skill. Prove me wrong. Go ahead, beat both Stalker and Arma on the hardest difficulty and get back to me on it. MP is much more challenging as well, actual realistic physics will do that.

            March 15, 2013 at 13:39

Mate, I don’t care about the COD 2/3 issue you refer to. If the game is good, I’ll play it. period…Company issues and behind the scenes dodgy deals or whatever, isn’t of interest to me…it’s like a dodgy documentary on music artists that show you stuff that you really shouldn’t bother yourself with. Enjoy the ‘music’…

Having said that , I will brush up my knowledge on this issue to have an understanding of where you coming from…I’m familiar with Arma but not Stalker which will certainly get looked into…I’m always keen on new ventures in gaming…

You sir win the internet, that is some quality trolling. If you were born after the 90s, this would be true, but sadly time existed before many of our younger gamers were born, and in fact, the forefather to FPS games is generally considered to be Wolfenstein 3D. It came out way back in 1992, and essentially spawned a genre. Thereafter you had a slew of FPS games from Doom, Marathon, Quake, Halflife.. etc. etc.

I get what you’re saying, I don’t really play COD any more, but I always liked the way they managed to have this crisp engine (granted it’s old now) but the character animation and gun animation were top-notch. I would probably have been less negative towards COD had they not gone the annual release route. It’s a bit like the AssCreed effect, an enjoyable and interesting franchise ruined by extreme overexposure and a lack of focus (well… the money is the focus… but you know what I mean).

In my opinion I don’t think COD has ruined FPS players, it simply made them used to a certain type of gaming envirnoment. They kill other players to recieve points and unlocks which gives them the advantage later on in the game. This sort of reward system is what drives people to love COD, as well as makes them extremely competitive. As a closer I think it all matters on the persons first encounter with FPS shooters. For example I’m a HUGE Halo fan, but I still love playing COD. If people simply play only one game and one game only, its obvious that they’re going to compare every other game they play to that game.

And I mean the first Mario game didn’t even have a story, but it was definitely less contrived than the average COD yarn.

It’s not rocket science, nor is the storyline that deep. Spec Ops: The Line managed to craft an amazing story using Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness as a backdrop, whereas COD plays it safe with its rehashing of early 80s but dismally watered down Tom Clancy.

COD 4 didn’t start a new genre (the modern shooter – first and third), because there were titles (most notably the Ghost Recon games) around that already explored war in the now I personally enjoyed COD4, but you’re painting a picture of COD that’s horribly out of sync with what really happened in the last few years.

LoL, not even remotely close. First of all, none of the weapons adhered to anything we’d consider a realistic physics engine, ergo, no bullet drop, and the weapon kick was microscopic in comparison to real life. There was no bullet impact physics, and I’m pretty sure current soldiers can’t hide behinds walls to refill health.

If you’re truly interested in how advanced weapons systems work, behave, and function in current times. CoD is not your answer. Arma (predates CoD4), is your answer (Or Stalker (predates CoD4), if you don’t mind adding in a bit of sci-fi/fantasy, their physics engines are beyond what most people are familiar with, but far, far closer to reality than CoD will likely ever be). But, that’s also not what CoD is, or attempts to be. If that were truly the case, the developers would be even more of a laughing stock. Plus, the folks who like CoD, aren’t really looking for that. And people need to realize that as well.

And yeah my point was not , that CoD have best Weapon physics and no other game have any WPhysics … My point was that CoD started upgrading their graphic engines and did this…

That’s like saying Doom ruined shooters because all of a sudden everyone wanted to make a similar game. It’s called innovation, and there will always be countless copycats. If cod really had ruined fps, then people would have forsaken it for something else. Which they eventually will do when something supercedes it anyway.

Back in the early 2000s it was Halo that ruined shooters, but in that case, Halo did bring a seachange. First-person shooters stopped being about navigating a labyrinth (with key cards, switches) and instead shifted to smaller areas. Sadly, that’s continued to our modern shooters, to the point where COD and even Battlefield 3 are essentially these follow-your-dumb-AI-Squad down increasingly narrow corridors – from one cutscene to the next.

This is true, not every gamer is equal, however we’re all susceptible to bad influence, and in the case of COD, you’re encouraged to play in a very specific way. It does take a while to break those old (COD) habits. I remember shifting from Bad Company 2 to Black Ops 1 and back to Bad Company 2 (a few years back), and having to unlearn what’s generally considered the norm in a typical COD game.

One example is quick scoping while run and gunning. It’s something that’s become almost indicative of the COD experience. Now sure, there’s a lot of disagreement even amongst veteran COD gamers, but the point is, you actually do see folks in other games trying to quick scope…

While i see your pov, i think it is incorrect to say that COD is all “run and gun” for instance the sniping tactic, while quickscoping is customary, to those less experianced the better method would be camping along the edges of the map, both possibly turning out the same way, so yes you’re persuded to quickscope and run and gun, but it is not the only way, and it’s profiling when you say that’s all there is

I believe that the reason most cod players are very young children or very obnoxious people is because it is so accessible to them and is catered towards them by Activision. It is not directly the game but the way it is presented.

CoD is really a hit or miss for people. Of course it has been catering to the younger audience with each new release but that doesn’t mean it ruined FPS players. CoD outsells itself every year when it is released and the community is good and bad. If you don’t like it, no need to bash it. If you like it, cool, you’re one out of the millions who like it.

I play COD, Halo, Medal of Honor, Battlefield etc. And I’m actually really good at all of them.

However yes a lot of people who play cod generally suck at every other game.

Also i can’t buy a game for their single player. Paying 60 dollars for something i will finish so quickly doesn’t make sense. At least multiplayer has a fast pace action to it that involves thinking too.

And i also like collaborating with my clan in search and destroy.

If halo or battlefield had search and destroy, that would be amazing. I like to think and not just mindlessly go into war like halo (battlefield involves thinking too, which is great). In CoD, search and destroy is the only game mode i play

why was there no mention of Counter-Strike in this? the fuck, that’s probably the biggest fps game ever played which made the genre explode (at least in the multiplayer field)… The fact that CS 1.6 is still played after over 13 years i think says alot…
